Introduction
Thank you Alan for inviting me to such a wonderful event. Acker clients know how to go big.
Flight 1 (1 note)
Red
2000 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux
93 points
From 5L. Lots of red fruit, roses and some spice. Fresh, forward open and easy to enjoy. Really nice.
Flight 2 (1 note)
White - Sparkling
1975 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon
94 points
Outstanding toast and apple on the nose with a slight nutty note on the palate. Very very fresh.
Flight 3 (4 notes)
White
2001 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet
91 points
Started out very linear, but ended up round and creamy. Nice citrus and spice notes.
White
1983 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet
86 points
On the downward side of the hill. This was more interesting than enjoyable.
White
1996 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet
96 points
Full frontal assault on the nose. Full rich citrus, oak and lovely minerality. Powerful and graceful. Long, oily finish.
White
1996 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet
90 points
Tight, linear and not exciting. Still nice, but nothing compared to the Batard.
Flight 4 (3 notes)
Red
1993 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
96 points
Wonderful Leroy nose of bright spice, red and black fruit, dried roses and a bit of earth. Extremely fresh and forward. Wonderful vibrant texture and energy. Long finish with fantastic grip.
Red
1990 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
This bottle was worse than the last one. A bit muddled and dirty. Black fruit and spice but this should be better.
Red
1991 Maison Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
flawed
Didn't know there was both Domaine and Maison Leroy BM this year. Unfortunately this was flawed.
Flight 5 (5 notes)
Red
1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin
93 points
A pronounced nose of dark fruit, iron, bacon and some earth. This seemed much bigger and chunkier than the bottle I had last year. This example clearly needs much more time to round out and is more consistent with the 98s.
Red
1990 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux
94 points
A bit stinky at first, but this gave way to wonderfully detailed black and red fruit, a lot of spice and a slight floral note. Great texture and complexity on the palate. Almost as good as the Ech.
Red
1990 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux
96 points
Wonderfully ripe red and black fruit on the nose and palate. Subtle but determined spice along with a hint of iron and earth. Ripe and forward yet elegant. The detail and harmony is really impressive. Long, tender finish.
Red
1998 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche
93 points
Big red fruit, huge spice. Very forward. More muscular and bold and lacked a bit of finesse. Love the big spice, but you have to be in the right mood for this.
Red
1995 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche
93 points
Much more evolved than the 98. More ferrous notes. The 98 had more stuffing but I liked this as much because it was slightly softer and less oblique than the 98.
Flight 6 (2 notes)
Red
1980 Jacqueline Jayer Echezeaux
89 points
Very cloudy, earthy and slightly muddled. But still an interesting drink.
Red
1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot
92 points
Big red fruit comes on strong on the nose and palate. Not much elegance here, but very tasty. Nice grip on the medium+++ finish.
Flight 7 (3 notes)
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux
97 points
Absolutely superb nose of fresh red fruit, loads of spice, fresh roses, iron and a touch of earth. Vibrant and pure on the palate. I have had a few 1990 DRC's and none have impressed me as much as this bottle. It was everything I imagined. Thrilling.
Red
1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant
92 points
I was excited to try this having had a few wonderful 1991 burgs recently, but this bottle seemed tired and uninteresting for what it is. That said, it was still damn good with excellent spice and complex nuanced fruit.
Flight 8 (3 notes)
Red
1995 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares
94 points
Quite a bit of funk on this nose, then moved to earth and finally black fruit over the 3min I kept smelling this before taking a sip. Love that complexity. Very structured, more red fruit on the palate. Medium finish. Needs time.
Red
1990 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares
95 points
A lot of dark fruit and chocolate on the nose. More bacon, beef and iron on the rich round palate. Love the depth and balance and interplay between the beautiful fruit and mature Burg characteristics. It was young and old at the same time.
Red
1993 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares
flawed
Corked and stripped of all the fruit I wanted.
Flight 9 (2 notes)
Red
1988 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin
Mature, sexy spice on the nose. The fruit on the palate seemed angular and somewhat disjointed.
Red
1999 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny
Nice fresh fruit on the nose, but the palate seemed muddled. Probably not correct.
Flight 10 (1 note)
Red
1989 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Black fruit, bacon and faded spice. I was fading too at this point, but the wine didn't stand out.
