Flight 1 - I. Warm ups (4 notes)

2011 Monte Tondo Soave Classico Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico
Light straw yellow color and quite reticent. Flavors of apple and stone, with a touch of bitter almond coming in on the finish. Guessed Chenin.

White
2012 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Chardonnay Bramìto del Cervo Italy, Umbria
88 points
Initially a bit reticent. Apple and mineral notes eventually emerge but it remains subtle and closed. Guessed Chardonnay.

Flight 2 - II. Reds (5 notes)

Red
2001 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Aromas of tobacco, dusty red earth and red currant preserves. Fully-integrated and balanced with flavors of spice, black fruit preserves and leather with a bright, juicy finish dominated by red fruit. 92-93 pts. I suspected this was ours. Most other guesses centered on Bordeaux. Drinking very well, with no reason to hold it. Drink now.

This was quickly double decanted off its sediment about two hours before the flight was poured.
Red
2008 Losada Vinos de Finca Mencía Bierzo Altos de Losada Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo
90 points
Crimson color. Initially very dirty- smells like a gym. Blackberry and vanilla notes lurk beneath the musty sweaty notes. The bouquet eventually comes around, losing the dirty notes and gaining a nice floral quality. Flavors of dark fruit and spice with a nice finish.
Red
2010 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Garnacha Campo de Borja Spain, Aragón, Campo de Borja
Deep color with aromas of vanilla, chocolate, graham cracker and black fruits. Tannins are quite firm; flavors of vanilla, blackberry and spice. Guessed Petite Sirah.

Set my glass aside and finished it with dinner after the next flight. Aromas of smoky dark fruit with a subtle meaty undertone. Flavors of black raspberry, black cherry and dark fruit; juicy and lush. Really needed a good two hours to open.
Red
2010 Antica (Antinori) Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Atlas Peak
88 points
Dark color with notes of freshly cut green pepper and black fruit. Tannins are firm and chewy. Flavors of red & dark fruit wit a decent finish. Simple. Guessed CA Cab that was either harvested too soon or made from a cool site.
Red
2003 Bodegas Muga Rioja Selección Especial Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
88 points
Opens with aromas of prune, plum and ripe fruit with hints of vanilla. Flavors of dark fruit and plum, with chewy tannins and vanilla. Lots of oak here too.
