Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2002 Rolly Gassmann Riesling Pflaenzerreben de Rorschwihr France, Alsace
91 points
Gold colour. A little petrol on the nose. Aromas of fresh citrus, more limes than lemons, wet granite, metals and minerals with a hint of honeysuckle flower. On palate, oily, viscous and glycerol, it has nice mouthfeel. Good fruit weight and structure. The impression of some sweetness, seemingly restrained residual sugar (I was not able to find the wine's RS). Detailed, non-linear flavour profile: limes and grapefruit, yellow apples and minerals. Good balance and shape. Quite long, finishes with palate lift. Fairly primary, there's easily 15 years' life in this wine.
White - Off-dry
1997 Rolly Gassmann Riesling Pflaenzerreben de Rorschwihr Vendanges Tardives France, Alsace
92 points
Lighter gold than the 2002. Aromatically complex, the bouquet just keeps opening while a glass of the wine sits on the table, revealing more dimensions. Less kero than for the 2002 but more exotic fruits - guava, pineapple, rock melon etc - bush honey, grapefruit marmalade on toast and minerals. The exotic fruits translate to the palate with flavours including pineapple, passionfruit and guava. There is some honeyed sweetness but again I'd guess the residual sugar is fairly restrained. Excellent architecture and fruit volume, this wine has 20+ more years in it. 92+.
White - Off-dry
2011 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
This is a special young wine. Light, watery colour. An attractive bouquet of talcum powder, yellow apples and other orchard fruits, baked apple pie and citrus. There are also some exotic fruit notes and nuances of small white flowers. Relatively approachable on palate but young and primary, obviously. The flavours are honey, pear and white peach, clotted cream, with nuances of tropical fruit. Some sweetness but not cloying, matched by good, bright acidity. Good structure. Long with mineral complexity on the back palate. Give it at least 10 years. 92 on potential, it may well go higher.
