Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Saint-Vincent France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
94 points
Light gold color. Looking back, my note is really similar to the previous time I had this. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Fantastic nose, very Dom like, earthy, with plenty of toasted yeastiness citrus and mineral and a touch of almond. The palate shows off its finesse, good depth, but fairly elegant, rich, full bodied, pear, toast, roasted nuts, long finish. Fantastic. 93+ to 94pts.

White - Sparkling
1996 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. BdB, but not in the same league as the Legras. Very consistent with my previous note on someone else's bottle. On the oxidative side, sour apple, mineral, almond, citrus. the palate is consistent, citrus, sour apple, nuts, average finish. The N/V I brought a couple weeks ago was better. 90+ to 91pts.

Pale gold color. drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was just showing so well; an absolute gem with gorgeous fruits, a mix of tropical fruits with kiwi, lychee and plentl of lime and citrus. The palate is bolstered by the fresh acids/cut and the lively tropical fruits. Good long finish. Really good stuff.

Closing

It's hard to decide on a wine of the night as so many did so well. But if gun is to head so to speak, the winners are the Grand Crus as one would expect. My co-favs were the '00 Dujac Charnes Chambertin and the 'O1 Rousseau Chambertin followed closely by the '00 Faiveley Clos de Beze and the '98 Laurent Clos du Vougeot. And don't forget the '96 Legras which killed too!!
