Flight 1 (19 notes)

Red
2013 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Volte Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
smoke, leather, high acidity, a bit closed with limited aromatics. Definitely young and intense tannins, but seems a little simple right now.
Red
2013 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
Visible wood influence at this stage, but great acidity on the palate and slightly softer tannins. Still way too young though.
Red
2012 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
Loads of wood and tannin on the nose. Showing lots of ripe fruit and very nice texture. Also way too young to drink.

Red
2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Loads of chalky tannin and intense acidity on the palate. Very dark nose with black cherry and burnt orange. Very nice length, but still very tight and young.

2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Pale red/orange. Great nose with burnt orange peel, plum, black currant. Less ``dark" than the regular brunello. Wonderful texture, but still really tasting for potential. Very young, with loads of silky tannins. Long finish.

1997 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Brought straight from the producer's cellar. Just unreal nose with mint, orange peel, wet leaf, stones. Great secondary. Lithe on the palate, showing silkiness and then depth. Still excellent acidity and excellent length. Still a very long finish. Probably the wine of the night.
Red
2011 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Some wood influence. Very ripe nose with plum and blueberry. Great depth on the palate; full body, medium acidity, soft tannin and lingering finish.

2011 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Excellent nose with plum, orange, mint. Softer on the palate and very plush. Loads of depth with earthy notes leaning mushroom. Loads of tannin and still very rich. Drinking better than the vecchie vigne right now.
Red
2010 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva PS Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Perfumed nose showing more of the mint/orange peel/mushroom character, but balanced by loads of dark red fruit. Softer tannins, but showing a bit more pithy bitterness on the palate. Wondrous.

2011 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Very reduced nose, showing lots of sulphur (from a bottle that was only open for a short time), which made it hard to taste. Even after vigorous swirling, only saw that the palate was nice with clean acidity but still full bodied.
Red
2010 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Doria Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Definitely ripe in style, but thankfully showing less reduction than the 2011. Full bodied, with mushroom and wood influence, with a nice finish.
Red
2011 Elio Grasso Barolo Gavarini Chiniera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Light red to orange on the edges. Showing dark cherries on the nose with dark chocolate and a slight nuttiness. Full bodied, but great vibrant acidity and loads of tannin on the finish.

Red
2011 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Showing a bit more wood influence, but also more complexity: orange, plum, leather. Great acidity. Longer finish. More balanced than the Chiniera at this stage. One of the highlights of the night.

2011 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
the only wine being poured by Aldo Conterno and one of the highlights of the night. Mint leaves, herbs, dark cherry. Great acidity and loads of tannin. Will probably be absolutely amazing with more bottle age.
Red
2010 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Torriglione Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Very classic with mint, orange peel, dark red cherries, dried fruit. Rich and soft on the palate, with medium acidity and very serious tannin. Hides the wood influence well and yummy.
Red
2009 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Sarmassa Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
From a magnum and perhaps slightly off. Mild wet cardboard to start with orange peel and mint notes coming out with time. Also definitely needs time.
Red
2011 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Very ripe style with wood influence, but very charming. Deep red in color. Showing dark cherry, sandalwood leaning earthy. Loads of dense tannin, which is somewhat coarse and granular at this stage. Needs time to soften.
Red
2011 Renato Ratti Barolo Conca Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Very tight at this stage. Leather, wet leaves, some nuts/minerals. Great density, high acidity, but definitely needs time to unwind.

2011 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Another one of the highlights of the night. Shows wood influence, but it isn't over the top. Reddish orange. Mushrooms, minerality, orange peel confit. Shows rather well right now, with a captivating nose. Good acidity and balanced tannin.
