Introduction

Lucky to see the new Fine Wine room at Acker and share some wine with new friends.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
One of my favorite MV champagnes - this was light and toasty and evolving. Bubbles are very soft and almost totally seamless. Delicious.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Ruinart Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
This is a pretty good, not great champagne. Very easy to drink, lively bubbles, hints of berries (but just hints). I enjoyed it, but it was not the Krug served alongside.

2000 Château L'Eglise-Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
What an absolutely amazing nose - I could smell the wine all night long. It was enticing. The palette didn't quite live up - more one dimensional and didn't really deliver on all of the spice I got on the nose. Instead more of a leather flavor and then a relatively quick finish. Suspect this is still completely a baby and maybe it was just too tight last night.
Red
2006 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
One of my favorite wines of the night - the Bordeaux was too thin and the California was too much and this hit that nice in the middle spot. Fruit and spice and quite a strong tannic structure this was really looking to be drunk with food (meat) and paired quite well with a slice of bacon. Almost an unctuous wine. Enjoyable.

2007 Sean Thackrey Pinot Noir Andromeda Devil's Gulch Ranch USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Marin County
This is a bit more intensive than what I like my wines to be. Was lacking in acidity to balance out the strong fruit and brambles and thus the almost jammy characteristic came through. There were hints of herbaceous notes - maybe mint, but it still felt overall just too much.
Red
2005 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
I was very excited to try this wine and I'll admit a bit disappointed. It's just much too young. I think 2005 was a growing season to age and this isn't even close to the drinking window yet. Fruit is a bit heavy, wine overall is a bit heavy. Nice tannic backbone which will keep it alive, but I'd predict needs at least another 10 years or a much longer decant than it had (opened about 45 minutes before we drank it).

1959 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Two Lafites in the last few weeks after having never had any experience with this wine. This was much younger tasting than the 1962 that we tried a few weeks ago although it's definitely on the downswing. Fruit still present and poking through. There's that caramely aged flavor in it. Wonderful nose. Very good wine although not the total blow away that I'd have hoped for for a wine at this price point.

2010 No Limit Wines Syrah The Nuts Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
Not my favorite of the tasting. This wine is very heavy and rich and is missing some of the evolution in the glass that I'd want. One of the other folks at the tasting said this was just her style and so it's certainly a preference things. I understand it's a relatively new winemaking enterprise and grapes are sourced from neighbors to create the wine.

Closing

Overall a fun tasting. I think I might have liked the Italian the best although the Lafite was pretty fun to try and the Shafer at the right time (or with the right decant) will be pretty spectacular.
