Flight 1 (19 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 Philippe Prié Champagne Tradition Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. I loved this tonight. Showing such lovely balance and and wonderful elegance. Certainly more refined than the N/V, as good as that is. Lovely apple and pear notes on the nose with a significant floral component, light honey, and a touch of citrus along with the requisite yeast. The palate really shows that elegance, nice acid, but good fruit without being heavy, pear, apple, and a bit of yeast, a touch of honey comes through with the white melon. Medium body and medium plus finish.
White
2007 Jean et Sébastien Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours plus. This really got short shrift tonight. It was cold out of the gate, and with the speed of the courses it ended up on the back burner until the very end after all the Bordeaux. Not exactly ideal, but whatever - it still showed its core of minerality and citric fruit, saline, tangerine, a touch of exotic melon as well, Very nice. 91+pts tonight. I suspect even better in a different environment.l

White
2003 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Medium plus dark gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. Its been over 3 years since my last bottle, and time has done nothing to impede the progress here. An absolutely wonderful bottle of white Bordeaux with depth a finesse galore. Wow, a great nose with depth, round, rich, lemon, pear, and white flowers. The palate is rich and round, a bit of almond paste, lemon, white melon, spice and a touch of oak on a long finish. Just a great texture. I loved it!

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Benoît Lahaye Champagne Rose de Maceration France, Champagne
90 points
Medium pale salmon color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was another wine that got a bot lost in the shuffle. When I got to it, thought it was very nice - I probably didn't have the food at that point to fully do it justice, but nonetheless it showed well.
Plenty of yeast, lots of red cherry and red berry fruit both on the nose and palate. Some nice strawberry and cream with cherry, yeast, fleshy, apple skin, mineral with a bit of a sharper edge on the finish. 89+ to 90pts.
Red
2003 Château Brane-Cantenac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was very good indeed. Showing plenty of ripe black fruits, cassis, black cherry, great nose, plenty of earth and nuance, a bit of baked black fruit character on the palate. Really a lovely wine and for the money, pretty hard to beat.
Red
2005 Château Béhèré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
88 points
Just took a small pour of this and followed over 45 minute plus. Full bodied, ok, dark fruits, a bit lean, oak, angular. Not bad, but a bit underwhelming.
Red
2008 Château Laforge France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Very dark red/purple color. This got 3 hours of decanting; drank 1 glass over an hour. showed very well for its age, fairly nice, youthful, big black fruits, cassis, blackberries, hints of blue fruit, pepper, oak, some alcohols shows. May get a bit better. 90+pts.
Red
1996 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Very dark red purple color, no hint of age. Decanted for 2.5+ hours. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was probably my wine of the night. It really had it all, the nose was singing, with a great perfume, plenty of saddle leather, earth, cassis, raspberry, and pencil lead. The palate brought everything full circle and emphasized the elegance, full, but weightless, not showing any age at all, leather, violets, cassis, blueberry, pencil, refined, and integrated, and very long. 94+pts. 1996 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
Corked. It didn't scream it from the nose, but the palate was clearly off and corky. The nose later showed it too., but to a lesser extent. Really too bad as I wanted to see the '96 Leovilles side by side.
Red
1994 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Very dark red/purple color, no bricking at all. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was another impressive wine. Really at its zenith I think. Earth, spices, bright fruits of cassis and raspberry, and a touch of wood on the nose. The palate has full body, with nice depth, layering, black and red fruits, leather, graphite, a bit leaner in the mid palate, integrated tannins and a nice lifted finish. 93+pts.

1995 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Very dark red purple color. 3.5hr hour decant, drank 1 glass over 60 minutes plus. Pretty similar to the last time I had this. The nose is open, with ripe black fruits, wood, cassis, balsamic. The palate shows big dark fruit, anise, blackberry, scorched earth, graphite, big, bold, cassis, and firm tannins. A bit edgy like many '95's.

1995 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 60 minutes plus. Dark fruit, wood, pencil, firm tannins, austere, dried herbs, medium plus body, dry tannins. Drinking fairly well, but probably past peak. 89+ to 90pts
Red
1999 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Very dark red purple color, no bricking. This had a very good nose with plenty of fine leather, a bit spice, raspberry, and some cassis notes, a bit of damp earth. The palate has nicely integrated tannins, some fine cocoa, graphite, cassis, and earth, on a medium plus finish. A little more time with this would have been nice. I liked it a lot. 91+pts.

1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
Corked and a half. What a shame for such a beautiful wine. Sucks.
Red
2000 Château Le Bon Pasteur France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. A little air, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was a back up and it served it role well. Ripe and full bodied, dense with black fruits, blackberry, black plum, chocolate, anise, wood, blackberry liqueur, medium plus finish. 91+ to 92pts.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Clos Haut-Peyraguey France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
dark gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. As good as this was, it was overshadowed by the '01 LP. No surprise, but this held its own fairly well. Orange, orange marmalade, spices, botrytis, citrus, spiced, full, long.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château d'Arche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
89 points
Small pour from 375ml. A bit sweet and a tad clying, ripe fruits, apricot, peach, honey, spicy, medium finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Château d'Yquem Declassified France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Drank 1 glass from 750ml over 20 minutes. This was young and bright and vibrant and fresh. So very good, better than a few months ago already. Pineapple, tropical, light medium body, very balanced. Can't go wrong here. Young Sauternes can be so hard to resist, and this is for sure.

Flight 2 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Waris-Hubert Champagne Blanc de Noir Brut France, Champagne
90 points
I got about as much of this as I did the last time, so not a lot, but I will say it was vibrant, with some good tart fruit, and good acidity. tart, the berry notes show, citrus, nice. 90+pts.
White - Sparkling
N.V. H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Réserve France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
Very light gold color. Again, a very small pour. But also again, a very good note. This was a bit warm, but was quite good. Yeast, mineral, stone fruits, pear, slightly sweet note on the palate, pear, mineral palate, medium finish. 90+pts
White
2012 Secret de Grand Bateau Blanc France, Bordeaux
90 points
Very light gold color. This was the first time I've had the '12, and it did not disappoint. Some of the previous vintages have not shown well at this point. But the '12 certainly is ready to satisfy. Bright nose with ample floral elements, meon peach, apple and a touch of oak. All comes together with a lighter body and a crisp clean palate. Excellent 90-91pts. Great QPR too.
Red
2000 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
corked. Interestingly, this came over from the other table. Poured and did not examine for 30 minutes. But whoa, this was clearly corked when I picked it up. Sounds like it was not so overt initially, but the palate was dicey.
Red
2000 Château Bahans Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
Small pour, I liked it, but a bit more lean than I recall, dark berry fruits, dusty tannins. Feels like this is on the down swing based on previous experience.
Red
2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Small pour. It feels like this has come a long way wince I last had it. Has that Lagrange elegance and refinement, red fruits, raspberry, classy wood notes, medium body and feminine. Very good.

2000 Château Cantemerle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
91 points
I just got a taste of this, but I liked it a lot. A little more lean, medium body, but plenty of character and red berry fruit, a little spice and wood, the fruit is nicely ripe and tannins are pretty fine. 90+ to 91pts.
Red
2000 Château Bellevue St. Émilion Grand Cru France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Literally had 1 swallow, but it was delightful. A little savory, smoke, pleasant, plum, plum sauce, cassis, very nice, ready to go.

1999 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
91 points
Small pour. Didn't take any notes on this. Very good given the vintage and expectations.
Red
2000 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Small pour. Had about an hour plus of air. This was probably my #2 WOTN. Showing wonderfully in it youthful glory. A bit tight on the nose yet still nice, but the palate is all there, wow, just beautiful, layered, savory, lush, creme de cassis, blackberry. vanilla, cigar, long finish, firm round tannins. 93+ to 94pts.
