Antipasto at our place; Dinner at Gloo Bistro

Tasted April 29, 2016 by VlgJeff with 377 views

Introduction

First gathering of "The Wine Group" = Bill & Harriet Lembeck; Linda and Henry Wasserstein; Bob & Janice Bowman. Told the group of the very modest ($15) corkage, and suggested they bring something "interesting".

Flight 1 - Antipasto (1 note)

Two bottles of Marisa Cuomo "Fiorduva" with antipasto spread of Genoa salami, marinated artichokes, sweet red peppers & mushrooms, boccocini, olives and asst'd crackers.

Our Wine Group consumed two bottles of this wonderful wine with a fine spread of antipasto, before going out to dinner. Agree with NNV, "Rich, round, pronounced fruit, tropical, lush, but balanced with enough acidity to make it very pleasant." An incredible blend of 3 native Italian grapes: Fenile, Ginestra and Ripoli. A solid "go-to" Italian white.

Flight 2 - Appetizers (1 note)

Red
1964 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Over 50 years in the bottle, and after only 1/2 hour of slow-ox, this beautiful wine came out as smooooooth as silk. It showed an incredible balance of ripe red fruits, acid and tannin. The fill was below shoulder, but the cork was original, and the finish was quite long. Nothing to gain by holding any longer, so drink up and enjoy!! Up against Cheval Blanc 1982; Margaux 1990; & Guigal La Mouline 1997. My and group #1 - WOTN.

Flight 3 - Appetizers & between courses (1 note)

Red
1982 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
No decant, and only about 1/2 hour slow-ox = not enough! This wine just wouldn't reveal itself. It started tightly wound and didn't open very much over the 30 minutes it was consumed. Will skip rating as there was nothing much to rate. Up against Cheval Blanc 1964; Margaux 1990; & Guigal La Mouline 1997. My, and group #4.

Flight 4 - Main Course (1 note)

Red
1990 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

No decanting, and only about 1 hour of slow-ox, probably kept this bottle from showing all its charms. Even though, it displayed a quite harmonious balance of ripe red fruits, acid, and tannins. Probably a good 10 years of life, maybe more. Up against Cheval 1964 and 1982; & Guigal La Mouline 1997. My #3, Group #2.

Flight 5 - Main Course (1 note)

Red
1997 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very tight when opened, so allowed to slow-ox for about 2.5 hours before serving. On the nose, this is all Cote Rotie (albeit a bit muted) with dark red and black fruits, spice, and roasted meat. The palate shows a well balanced wine with dark red fruits, some cherry, and a vein of spice; with well integrated tannins. Estimate another 5-8 years of cellar life. Up against 3 Bordeauxs: Cheval Blanc 1964 and 1982, and Margaux 1990. My #2, Group #3.

Closing

Great evening. Let our server Alex taste our wines. Asked for banquette along wall, but party of 16 bumped us to the rectangular table in the middle of the restaurant - with no "compensation". There were 7 appetizers (Linda F), 8 mains, 8 desserts + couple of after dinner drinks. Bill was $178/couple, incl. extra $10 on top of 20%.
