Memorial Day Mondo Event - Burghounds & Bordelais

Tasted May 28, 2016 by Francophile1 with 609 views

Introduction

This event started as just a few guys who love wine coming together to drink some good Burgundy and Bordeaux. It turned out to be an incredible tasting event with some fantastic wines. If I had only one day to live, I would for sure be pouring Burgundy and Bordeaux. To the one who brought the '06 DRC Richebourg and the '82 Pichon Lalande... Thank You!

Flight 1 - Burgundy Flight (10 notes)

White
2009 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
94 points
Consistently performs as one of the best white wines ever made. I love the freshness... incredible minerality. Great wine.

2010 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

For such a young Burgundy, this is drinking incredibly well now. Bright red strawberry, rhubarb, exotic nose, cinnamon spice on the finish. Most called this as a 2006 vintage 1er cru. Lively & light on its feet.
Red
2009 Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard Corton-En Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
91 points
Great core of Grand Cru fruit, but it is tightly wound and not giving up much. The tannin on this wine suggests it has many years to go. If you have some in the cellar, sit on it for another 5 years.
Red
2003 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru
91 points
Still drinking incredibly well. Blinded, nobody could tell it was from the hot vintage of 2003. This had finesse and was almost feminine in style. Impressive.
White
2003 Domaine des Lambrays Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
89 points
Still drinking well... not past its prime. However, I was expecting a little more from this wine.
Red
2008 Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
91 points for where it is today... 96-98 points for where it will be in 10 years. I killed a baby by opening this wine so early. Nevertheless, it was fun to taste this young to know the true potential it has for future bottles. Love the anti-counterfeit approach Ponsot now takes with their proprietary plastic corks and a heat exposure label to let you know if the wine has been exposed to heat. This wine was a monster and just needs more time in the cellar to mellow out.
White
2010 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
97 points
Maybe one of the best white wines I have ever had. This rocked everyone's world and had it not been a white wine, could have competed for WOTN. Incredible tasting experience. If you can get your hands on this wine, it is worth the $$ for the tasting experience.

2007 Domaine Perrot-Minot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Another great Burgundy in the line up... Drinking beautifully now straight from the bottle. PnP. Wild strawberry, red raspberry, underbrush, and mushroom jumps from the glass.

2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
98 points
I don't care who you are... that is damn good juice. I could sit and smell this wine all night long without ever drinking it. Incredible nose... absolutely incredible. "Exotic" would be an appropriate word for this wine... not in a California Pinot sense, but in a everything Burgundy sense. Of the four times I've had the pleasure of drinking DRC, Richebourg is always my favorite (even better than La Tache). This won WOTN for the Burgundy flight (no surprise). It was blinded too, I promise.

2009 Marchand & Tawse / Pascal Marchand Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
While this wine almost had a new world signature in the concentration of fruit, it still had all of the classic Burgundy notes that I love. Maybe it was the '09 vintage strutting its stuff? Nevertheless, this is a great mix between old and new world Pinot Noir.

Flight 2 - Bordeaux Flight (10 notes)

Red
1995 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
The best showing I've ever had of this wine. Having tasting this at least 10 times over the past decade and been somewhat disappointed, I was not let down this time around. This particular bottling was much more extroverted showing classic St. Julien notes of cedar, tobacco, cassis, and asphalt. It still had a good concentration of fruit suggesting it has just entered its maturity window.
Red
2003 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Amazing what a few years in the bottle will do to a wine. I had this vintage of Pavie two years ago and it was tough as nails not showing much. Two years later and BAM, this wine is starting to strut its stuff. Everyone thought this was left bank Bordeaux due to the sheer depth & concentration. Once the wine was revealed, we all understood why, thanks to the Gerard Perse wine making style. However, I did not get the over extraction or over ripeness you might expect from the 2003 vintage. This was showing great on this night.

2000 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Showing its best so far on this tasting. Classic Pauillac notes expressed in the glass just starting to enter its maturity window. You can definitely pick up the herbal greenish notes on the finish. Drank the remaining 1/3 of the bottle the next evening and it was still holding on strong. While not the '82 or '96, which in my opinion are the best examples of Pichon Lalande, it is still a worthy wine.

1990 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
97 points
'90 Montrose consistently places in my top 10 of all-time wines. I am fortunate to have had this wine at least a dozen times and it continues to impress. At this point my favorite Bordeaux vintage of all time is 1990 because it blends opulence with terroir. Nothing like exotic Bordeaux varietal fruit blending perfectly with flavors of the earth. This particular bottle of '90 Montrose was a text book example of what this wine can be... black (as pitch) fruit mixed with truffles, wild game, beef blood / iron, and a little bit of funk that makes the nose on this wine fantastic. The finish goes on for over a minute. For the Bordeaux purists out there, the wine might be a little "dirty" for your liking, but I love it. The best one night stand wine you can buy!

1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
100 points
How do you follow a '90 Montrose? With a perfectly stored bottle of '82 Pichon Lalande is how. The last bottle I had of this was cooked, but this wine was perfect. At this stage of maturity, I place this as the best I've had from 1982 even beating the Latour & Mouton. Only time will tell if the 1st growths will beat it as they mature. Nevertheless, this is a top notch 1st growth worthy wine. In the glass is has everything I love about Bordeaux and is 100% Pauillac in every sense of the word. Wow! This wine won WOTN hands down and it was up against stiff competition (no label bias either... everyone agreed it was WOTN before it was revealed). A memorable wine for the ages!

1998 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Tough to follow the '82 Pichon Lalande in this tasting line-up, but the '98 Mouton performed better than I expected. Classic Pauillac notes with a long finish. While it still has good structure and youthfulness, I did not get the grainy tannins that I often get from the '98 vintage. Decanted for 2 hours, this wine was fleshy and fat. I did not experience any leanness that others have described with this vintage of Mouton.

1999 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
After having two strong examples from Pauillac, this stood out as unique and allowed us to very clearly call this as a noble wine from Graves. Clean lines, pure black fruit, laced with road tar, truffles, and an almost new world sweet finish. Classic Pessac wine from a not so great vintage. Drinking great now! Decanted for 2 hours.

A back-up wine for the corked 1986 Montrose. A solid effort, but it couldn't stand up against the competition in this tasting event. Hard to give it a fair analysis due to where it fell in the line-up. I would like to taste this again at a later date to give it a fair review.

I love it when the same wine shows up twice in the same blind tasting. It makes for an interesting intellectual tasting experience. This bottle was not stored as well as the prior bottle. The core of fruit was a bit faded and it was showing many more secondary characteristics of tobacco and leather. It was still excellent, but not a perfect example of this wine.

A great night indeed!
