Introduction
Got a small group together for a fish fry at Gary's. Of course this was contingent on having fish! Otherwise it was going to steaks and an entirely different wine theme! Fortunately, there was plenty of fish and it was cooked to perfection.
Flight 1 - Bubbles (2 notes)
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Cuvée Rubis
France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Light salmon color. - very pretty. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. I just loved this wine again. Almost ethereal, poised and elegant. Nice florals, strawberry cream, citrus, tart, mineral, wonderfully clean and fresh. Very consistent with a bottle we had almost a year ago.
Flight 2 - Rose (1 note)
Rosé
N.V. Domaine Serene "R"
USA, Oregon
Bright pink color. Very tasty as usual. Strawberry, watermelon, dry, citrus, sweeter essence on the palate. Awful good, though a bit pricey. 89+pts.
Flight 3 - Whites (4 notes)
White
2013 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Light straw color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This has much more body than your typical SB, more texture and depth. I appreciate the fruit here, not one dimensional like so many. Citrus, but more subtle grapefruit, some tropical fruit, minerals, plush texture, good acid but not aggressive. 90+ to 91pts.
White
2010 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Light greenish gold color. Drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. This was a rock star tonight. Another wonderful 2010 showing extremely well given the youthfulness. Tons of dry extract, green fruits abound, apple, lime, pear, plenty of breezy ocean air and fantastic balance and length. Grand cru depth with tons of precision and elegance. My and group WWOTN with 5 of 6 first place votes. 93+ to 94pts.
White
2010 Chartron et Trébuchet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embazées
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over an hour. Very good with lemon, lemon oil, meyer lemon, flinty mineral, spices, Grand Marnier. There was something on the nose that we argued about just what it was. Not sure we nailed it. Kind of an aromatic, orange liqueur-like spice thing. My #3 WWOTN and group #2. 91+pts.
White
2010 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch
USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
Another good bottle of this wine. Ripe with tropical fruits, pear, melon, guava, a touch smoky, medium full bodied, oak, medium plus finish. 91+pts.
Flight 4 - Dessert (3 notes)
White - Off-dry
1996 Stephan Ehlen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. This was in great shape, very bright and fresh. A lot of fusil up front, some blows off, but it retains a fair bit. On the nose and palate: peach, tangerine, good mineral grip, powdery peach sweet tarts, pineapple, sweet but has a good acid spine to hold up to it. Long finish. My #3 DWOTN and tied for #2 group.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch (Müller-Burggraef) Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Medium gold color. Drank 1 glass from 375ml. Every bit as good as when we had this with the owner 3 years ago. Developing even more depth and nuance, wow, tasty, intense, nectarine, honey, floral, tangy peach, orange marmalade, long finish. Unanimous group #1 DWOTN.
