Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2015 Pride Mountain Vineyards Viognier USA, California, Sonoma County
91 points
A very well balanced Viognier, with typical notes of white peach, green apple, citrus flowers, lemon, and a hint of wet stone. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, but held its frame nicely mid-palate and throughout the finish.

The texture was notable, as it didn't throw off that steely astringency lesser Viogniers can sometimes have. I'm not sure if there was any oak treatment here (as it wasn't overtly noticeable if there was wood used), but it certainly was a smooth wine. Not an overly cerebral wine necessarily, but a perfect summer wine to have with lighter fare.

Paired with BBQ jalapeño cheese poppers.

Red
2012 Eric Kent Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Sascha Marie USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Tasted alongside the 2012 Talley Rosemary's Pinot and 2010 Kosta Browne Gap's Crown Pinot. The Pinot flight was paired with a cheese and charcuterie plate.

The EK was the most reserved and reticent of the three upon initial PnP. Some cranberry, pomegranate, strawberry-vanilla, and a little alcohol. The finish was clipped and a little biting.

After about six+ hours of slow O2, it was in a really nice place. Earth and spice box notes had arisen, as well as deeper/riper red berry flavors. I think 92 points is pretty much the apex of this Pinot. If choosing to drink now, decant for a couple of hours. Air definitely helps.

Still, this was ultimately last in the lineup. A "good" Pinot on the final sips, but a tad forgettable. My last bottle.

2012 Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir Rosemary's Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley
93 points
Tasted alongside a 2012 Eric Kent Sascha Marie Pinot and a 2010 Kosta Browne Gap's Crown Pinot. The Talley ultimately finished in the middle, with the KB pretty much slaughtering the Talley and the EK. This Pinot flight was served with a cheese and charcuterie plate.

The Talley was as tight or tighter than the EK on initial PnP. Similar to my previous notes on June 12, 2016. High-pitched bitter cranberry, pomegranate, some unripe strawberry, and a little bit of earth. Fairly acidic at first.

After six+ hours of slow O2, this (like the EK) had fanned out very nicely. Deeper and showing more viscosity. A lot of earth, cedar/mulch, and soil flavors, along with baking spices emerged. More blue/purple berry and some ripe red fruit flavors. A little more depth and terroir expression than the EK.

If opening this now, definitely decant for a few hours. Preferably, leave this alone for another year minimum. 93+ points for now.

2010 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
95 points
This was a clear winner when tasted alongside a 2012 Talley Rosemary's Pinot and a 2012 Eric Kent Sascha Marie Pinot. Served with a cheese and charcuterie plate.

Baking spice, cola, and dark, earthy red berry and black cherry flavors jumped out on initial PnP. After a number of hours of slow O2, plus some vigorous swirling in the glass, the medley of flavors draped across the palate even more beautifully. I've admittedly been on a bit of a KB bash session with a lot of their recent 2012 and 2013 bottlings failing to cut the mustard. But this 2010 Gap's Crown made me feel both happy and sad. It was a beautiful, deeply pitched wine, but it reminded me that 2010 was the last of the great KB vintages (in my humble opinion) to deliver the quality that I had expected from this winery.

In the end, this was a 94-95 point wine, delivering at its best around the third hour of slow O2. This certainly has some life left in it; drink now and over the next two+ years.

Red
2009 Williams Selyem Zinfandel Forchini Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
This bottle was brought over by a friend. I am not much of a Zin fan overall, but this kicked out some nice brambly earth notes along with the ripe blackberry, plum, and cedar flavors. It had some spice too, which complemented the bacon-wrapped medjool dates with paprika and asiago cheese with which it was served.

Seemed like it was drinking at an optimum window. Initial PnP didn't differ much to the taste of it after an hour or two in the glass.

91-92 points. Still had a bit of that rounded, grapey mouthfeel about it (the way many Zins can have). Not as delineated as a top-shelf Carlisle or Turley Zin (for example), but this WS certainly had some nice earth and depth to it.
Red
2013 L'Aventure Estate Cuvée USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles Willow Creek District
94 points
Performing as it has been over the course of the last year, the Estate Cuvee displayed its typical electric purple color; immediately accessible on the first sips. Notes of dark purple and black fruits, blueberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, and vanilla bean.

Paired great with bacon wrapped dates with paprika and Asiago cheese.

The same notable energy and viscosity I'm accustomed to with this wine, with a thick mid-palate that presents a nice interplay between a Cabernet and the Syrah components. 94-95 points this tasting.

This was a slow O2 over three+ hours. Evolved well with no full decant needed.

Red
2009 Revana Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
90 points
On initial PnP, this threw off alcohol, cedar, and plum. After a slow O2 for about an hour (and some decent swirling in the glass), the confluence of flavors improved more seamlessly. Still, it never could shake the plum and cedar aftertaste. Not bad necessarily, but fairly one note at this point. Seemed a little past its prime drinking window.

This also suffered a bit because it had been drunk alongside a 2012 Myriad GIII and a 2013 L'Aventure Estate Cuvee. There was no way the Revana was going to survive in that company.
Red
2012 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
95 points
This was one of the stars of the evening. No decant. PnP and slow O2 over an hour of consumption. The bottle was empty after an hour-and-a-half.

Black and red currant, dark black cherry, bitter chocolate, whole clove, anise, and a kiss of allspice.

Paired great with BBQ pork sliders with bacon mustard sauce, tangy mustard slaw, on Hawaiian sweet rolls.

Drink the Myriad GIII now and over the next few years.

Red
2007 Pott Wine Cabernet Sauvignon Kaliholmanok Bel Canto USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
100 points
There are those times in life (and in wine) when all the stars align. I don't give out 100 points hardly ever (maybe once or twice so far - and I've been lucky enough to have some pretty phenomenal wines over the past year especially). But this 2007 Pott Kaliholmanok had everything I would ever want in a wine. In an absolute perfect drinking window right now.

This was tasted in my cellar at around 57-58 degrees; PnP right out of the bottle and into the glass. Beguiling notes of red, purple, and some blue berry fruit, red and black currant, elephant heart plum (yes that's a real type of plum!), rusty iron, sedimentary rock (dust), red licorice, black asphalt, and spice. Flawless mid-palate; not too heavy, but totally enveloping. Finish went on for 90 seconds.

I could have taken this whole bottle down on my own. It was one of the best Napa Cabernets I've ever had in my life... And this is after previously drinking a number of awesome and powerful/heavy Cabs earlier in the evening.

My last bottle. The Kaliholmanok from Pott is typically one of my favorites (the Arsenal is pretty awesome as well). This 2007 was a very, very special wine. Great way to finish off the evening!

Drink now!
