Introduction

Some great wines with friends

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2001 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
89 points
The most impressive element of this wine was it's apparent lack of maturity. Would have said this was less than five years old if I'd had it blind. Lovely nose, honey blossom and chalky complexity. The palate was good too but maybe lacked a bit of concentration and was a bit phenolic on the finish. An enjoyable wine but the 08 showed that this domaine has really stepped it up a gear in more recent times. This bottle showed what a tragedy it is that so many white burgundies don't go the distance because of premox.

This was a great bottle of wine. Initially very reductive and strong sulphidic aromas. These blew off to reveal a wine of great complexity with impeccable balance. More concentration than the 01 we had beside it and really quite thrilling too with the trademark structure which is the signature of the climat. More slate than chalk like in it's mineral expression. Everything (almost, it's no Coche though) you could want in a CC and well priced IMO for a wine of such high quality. This domaine hasn't had a miss in recent times. Great wine.

2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This was great again. Had a few times now and each time can't help be impressed by the fine bones it possesses. The tannins are silky smooth but not lacking in power which are a trademark of this region. They are however so fine as to be almost, but not quite, falling into Burgundy like territory. I think this wine is so unique in it's elegance for a Barolo and I absolutely love it. Light on its feet and ethereal drinking beautifully now. Wonderful wine.

2011 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Boy it's a lottery with white burgundy. Poured out advanced colour oh oh. Aldehydic palate which showed a glimpse of what this wine might have been but has been stripped of its goodness. Premox claims another victim. Damn it!

2004 Joseph Drouhin Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
94 points
High quality and classy wine. Very distinctive nose, sauvage, savoury slightly earthy gravel maybe a hint of tobacco coming from maturity. The Wine is very beguiling on the nose and palate, certainly Chambertin pedigree, liquid silk with loads of character and a touch of the "Je ne sais quoi". Builds complexity the longer it goes and the last glass is the best, brilliant for the vintage for sure. The wine glides effortlessly and has excellent length with the tannins caressing right through the finish and holding the note as it tails off. Seriously impressed with this as it's just a lovely wine and a bargain for a Chambertin. Drank this on my own whilst absorbing stage 8, 2016 Tour de France in the Pyrenees. This wine restores faith that for all the average wines had along the way from every level the brilliance of Burgundy is still worth pursuing as it has no equal. Well done Drouhin in a difficult year this shines brightly.

2013 Mount Mary Quintet Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

I normally love these wines but not this one. Very pithy and lacking elegance. Atypical for this producer, a bit astringent and seems quite acidic which further narrows an already lean palate. Not unexpected as it wasn't a great year for the Yarra. See the 2010, 06 or the 04 if you want the real thing.

2014 Clos Cibonne Tibouren Côtes de Provence Cuvée Spéciale France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
79 points
The only good thing about this wine is a peekaboo from behind a curtain of Brett which gives an indication of what this wine might have been. I think it would have been pretty enjoyable but for the lick of Brett and a seemingly unresolved primary ferment which has left too much sugar on the table. Between cork, premox and Brett issues I'm finding European wine a minefield to navigate. At least this one was inexpensive

2010 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
84 points
It doesn't give me any pleasure writing this review as it flies in the face of previous comments. This wasn't an off bottle either. This wine is just an example of the damage which can be done when a wine is affected by brettanomyces spoilage. It's not that obvious at first, on the nose anyway, but the pallet is a good indicator. I've had some excellent bottles over the years from Allemand but I think lately they've got an issue.
The nose has classic Cornas character musk, olive, pepper and spice but it is dark and slightly grubby. Muted somewhat. Initially I thought it was going to be good. The pallet is tough as old boots not in the classic way a Cornas should be either the tannins are dry, raspy and chunky with zero texture. The acid is really piercing too as the pallet is very lean and unyielding. The wine lacks generosity and is mean and tight. The tannins get more aggressive the longer the wine sits in the glass until they were so bitter none of us could persist with the wine and we tipped 3/4 of a $200 bottle down the sink and moved on to something else. Major disappointment. This is not because the wine isn't ready yet or too young. There are no excuses for wine like this, it's a result of Brett spoilage which has hollowed out the palate and left just a shell of what the wine would have been. Once you recognise this the label doesn't cloud your judgement as I was a believer for a long time of Allemand. If you want the real deal avoid this overpriced disappointment and buy Clape which doesn't suffer from any of the aforementioned problems.

2013 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
82 points
One of the riper Jamet's and not better for it. Has some nice elements on the nose, sauvage, spicy and a lifted perfume. The palate is very high toned, sweet fruited and acidic. Unfortunately the balance has been compromised here by either growing conditions or liberal use of acid in the winery. There is a kind of overripe/underripe unpleasant sour like character which makes the wine lean very showy and not much fun to drink. Given the premium commanded here it was again (like the Allemand) a disappointment.

Closing

Bonneau's have really excelled and lifted their game in recent years. Now up there with the best. Allemand is a sad case unfortunately and until he works out what's going on in the cellar regarding Brett, I won't be touching them.
