Flight 1 (20 notes)

White - Sparkling
2006 House of Arras Blanc de Blancs Australia, Tasmania
89 points
Apple, vanilla and pear. Quite a lot of vanilla sweetness on the palate with some spicy fruit coming in behind. Good length.
White
1995 Grosset Riesling Watervale Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
90 points
Golden coloured. Petrol, pear, quince, lemon and a woodsy character that I don't mind. Quite rich still on the palate, with the edges having softened out. Holding up well, though it feels like it is definitely time to drink these.
White
1998 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling The Contours Museum Reserve Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
90 points
Very floral, light kero, apple and toast. Acid is still very bright and as the wine warms up, the fruit begins to show a little more of itself, making the balance better. Slowly, slowly, slowly developing, but developing all the same.
White
2004 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
91 points
White florals, line, spices and pine. Acid is quite piercing initially, but after a few sips it doesn't feel as dominating. The fruit is quite delicate but what is there is pleasant. Obviously hadn't hit its straps yet, but it is on the first step to get there.

White
2004 Meerea Park Sémillon Alexander Munro Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
88 points
Floral, spice and light honey aromas. Has some roundness to it on the palate but it finishes nicely clean. Medium length and getting close to being at its peak.
White
1999 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
flawed
Too advanced. My last bottle of this 10 years ago was heading downhill quickly so either two unlucky bottles or this one has sailed past where it should be.
White
2010 Kumeu River Chardonnay Hunting Hill New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Kumeu
91 points
Pear, mineral, smoky sulphur and lemon drops. Rich flavor profile, there is plenty of fruit depth and while the fruit sweetness makes me think new world, the texture isn't far off making me think of Burgundy. Good balance and acidity, this is very good drinking.
Red - Sparkling
N.V. Rockford Black Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
flawed
2011 disgorgement. Corked.
Red
2009 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
93 points
Tobacco, pepper, chocolate, violets and cherry along with some spicy earth notes - there is complexity here to the nose. Bright fruit is still the prominent note on the palate, there is a savoury element and plenty of length and structure that shows that this is on its way to be awesome, but just needs some more time still.

N.V. Sami-Odi Shiraz Little Wine #2 Australia, South Australia, Barossa
88 points
Stalk, meat, tar and violets. Good acidity, there is some savoury and quite lean fruit that doesn't quite keep pace. Maybe lacking a little interest as well.
Red
1970 Saltram Shiraz Hydraulic Pressing Barossa Australia, South Australia, Barossa
90 points
Strawberry, mint, earth, ash and chocolate. Nicely resolved and mild palate, there is some red fruit still holding in and there is really good balance here. Maybe just a little bit less complexity than a couple of previous bottles but still very good.
Red
1990 Penfolds Bin 389 Australia, South Australia
90 points
Licorice, oak, blackberry, tobacco and earth. Palate is quite high in acid, with good fruit lift still. Tried this 4 years ago and thought another 5 years would be good, but probably another 5 again would be no problem.
Red
1996 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
95 points
Blueberry, cherry, ash, meat, redcurrant, pencil shavings and earth. Beautifully balanced, has great poise and texture. Really finely detailed. I love this a lot, there is so much composure and style. Excellent!
Red
1996 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
90 points
Menthol, redcurrant, cedar and black cherry. Rich and full palate, plenty of drive - attractive and well made, but the plushness does bother me a little bit. It all comes together well and I enjoyed drinking it, but just didn't wow me tonight.
Red
1998 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 Australia, South Australia
90 points
Ash, vanilla, charcoal and coconut. Tannins are still bold, there is a wealth of structure that makes me think this should live a long long time. No hurry to open these as time can only benefit these.

Red
1996 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
91 points
Eucalypt, cigar, slate, kirsch, undergrowth and five spice. The palate has good acidity, with restrained fruit and really settled tannins. Fairly open in style tonight, it is in a good spot but will develop further over the next 5-6 years.
Red
2010 Wendouree Shiraz Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
90 points
Mint, cherry, kirsch, charcoal, spice and graphite. Has some red fruits but the density is pretty light on. Acid kick comes through on the mid-palate. Fruit and acid feels like it syncs well. Won't hurt to open this one with another 10 years on it.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Oro Puro USA, California, Napa Valley
89 points
250g/l residual sugar, 65% sauvignon blanc, 35% semillon. Caramel, quince, ash, malt, coconut and sea spray. The sugar dictates terms on the palate, there is a whole lot of intensity and while I think a little more acidity would help this shine, this is interesting to try.
Red - Fortified
1939 Seppeltsfield Para Liqueur Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Sultana, apple brandy, cedar and toffee. Rich on the palate, the fruit and sweetness are both quite full on and only just keep up with the spirity alcohol. Not quite up to the level of the last bottle I tried.
White - Fortified
N.V. Morris Muscat Old Premium Rare Australia, Victoria, North East, Rutherglen
94 points
Sultana, plum, raisin, toffee, chocolate and coffee. Sweet but fresh and lifted. Great length and depth. Ramps up in intensity as the palate continues, really driving through.
