Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL

Introduction

A great tasting of Nuits St. Georges current releases from Knightsbridge, plus some older bottles from a few of our cellars.

Flight 1 (18 notes)

White
2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Apple, lemon drop with a hint of dried fruit. Slightly floral start. Moderate weight, overall good balance for right now. I prefer this over the 2012 tasted next, but they are each good representations of their respective vintages.
White
2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Bigger and fatter vs the 2013 just tasted, but less elegant or energetic. Good for now.
Red
2012 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
Tasting, brief note. Black and red cherry flavors and aromas with leather and some barnyard, slightly more than I'd expect at this age. Good for its level.
Red
2011 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. A lighter and elegantly styled NSG, showing its Vosne-like character. Advancing earth notes. Bit firm finish. Slightly less concentration than I'd expect, or certainly vs the 2012 also tasted today. Similar to when tasted before.
Red
2012 Domaine Gille Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. Elegant and nicely balanced with mostly black fruit, moderate ripeness and old school NSG character. Similar to when tasted a few months ago. Good value. Drinking well now with the ability to age.
Red
2005 Domaine de Montille Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Fairly large scaled black fruit with faint signs of maturity, much like most 2005s. Very good length, still showing firm tannins on finish. Good now and prob for another decade. Much more integrated and tasty vs 5 years ago when tasted last.
Red
2009 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
88 points
Tasting, brief note. Floral, spice and black cherry aromas that I really liked. Seems riper on palate, less balanced, more like some of the fleshier 2009s. Still overall good+.

2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
89 points
Tasting, brief note. First time tasting this since barrel tasting May 2014. More red than black fruit with savory spice. Lighter style, nicely elegant and balanced with soft structure. Moderate length and intensity. Cellar for another year or three, then best 2018-2028ish.

Tasting, brief note. Similar to another bottle from earlier this year, but definitely earthier aromas to start. Better palate with moderate fruit, subtle spice and very good balance. Best near-term.

2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Good cross-section of cherry aromas and flavors with dried herbs throughout. This seems more concentrated than I recall from multiple previous tastings, so like its trajectory. Cellar for several more years. Drink the 2013 earlier.

Tasting, brief note. Ripe black fruit with very good density. Lots of spice. More structure than usual, but clearly also with the substance to take advantage of that structure. My favorite of the 4 vintages of Marechale tasted today, even if not yet at its peak.

2013 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. black cherry aromas with anise, black pepper and dried herbs. Black cherry flavors with some red hints. Good spice start. Firms up now at finish with a mineral notes. Needs to 2020 or later in the cellar. Very good concentration gives me optimism for its potential as if softens.
Red
2013 Benjamin Leroux Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Black berries here, showing the biggest fruit to this point in the tasting with very good density. Elegant and well styled for both NSG and the vintage, with tannins already starting to soften, but certainly cellar to 2020 or later.

2011 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Tasting, brief note. Very pretty red fruit with spice I expect from Vosne. Elegant and well textures in an overall package easy to enjoy in every way other than price. I slightly preferred the 2013 vintage tasted next.

Tasting, brief note. Also all red fruit with baking spice. Similar profile to the 2011, but better density and length. Also very well balanced.

2012 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Nicely floral start with both black and red cherry. A very exciting combination on Vosne and NSG character here, showing more mineral and tannic structure than I typically expect from this wine, but in a very balanced package. I'm not always a big fan of Grivot Boudots, but I really like this in 2012.

2012 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Ripe and very concentrated black fruit with moderate spice. Excellent textures really showcase NSG's bold tannins, sauvage hints and tendency towards intriguing minerally textures for the top wines. My favorite current release wine o the tasting.

Open and decanted approx 30 minutes before trying. Nicely ripe, nicely mature. Elegant tannins nicely integrated, good mineral and acid textures. Very good length. I brought this because of the 2012 in the tasting lineup, and enjoyed them in context. At a wonderful place now, possibly upside over the next few years,
