Walking around Porto, visiting the Port cellars, a great experience.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red - Fortified
2011 Croft Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
94 points
Rich and deeply fruited, fleshy structure, blue fruits, plums, very refined and smooth but deep, with fine tannins. A lovely young port.

A deeply fruity profile, not much sign of development, just a little caramel, fleshy, blue and black fruits, good but not as special as the 2011.

Tasted at cellar, incredible to find this available to taste. Amazing dark fruit flavours, with rich earthy caramel present but not overpowering just adding complexity, refreshingly youthful. Delicious.

Tasted at cellar door. Profile is very tight, finely structured, lighter style. Pure clean but not overly expressive flavours.

This is quite opened up now, has some earthy developed notes, caramel, rich ripe berries, interesting, a little disjointed at an in-between stage. Probably needs time now.

Cellar door. Pure ripe delicious flavours. Ultra smooth, not huge structure, black berry fruits, super refined tannins, fine acidity, drinks beautifully.

2002 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Vargellas Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
A bit hot, rich ripe dark berries, still very youthful. Has an edge of rich earthy developed tawny character which is mostly overpowered by fruit, blue and dark, structure is relatively soft.

Tasted at cellar door. Denser and richer than the Croft, youthful berries mixed with rich earthy characters, really dense, thick flavours, amazing for its age, blueberry and blackberry, rich Christmas cake and caramel, also beats the 40yr tawny for depth and bright fruit, spectacular.

A nicely balanced blend of fruit and rich oxidative caramel and scorched earth, beautiful fruit, plump and ripe, clean and fresh, drinks beautifully.

N.V. Taylor (Fladgate) Porto 30 Year Old Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto

Tasted at cellar door. Compared to 20 its thicker and richer but not especially different in flavour profile, more intense, smooth, loses nothing in terms of balance, refinement, honey, essence of raisins, explosive.

Tasted at cellar door. Super smooth, rounded, has absorbed the fruit, but still hugely rich, structure is noticeably cleaner and more refined than younger versions, amazing wine, blue and black fruits are meshed with the rich earthiness, superb.

Tasted at cellar door. Vibrant, great fruit intensity, smooth though, has a softness to it, lush, no hard edges, drinks nicely, no sign of development.

Good medium weight, smooth, in that in between stage of flavours with fruits and earthy characters not yet melded, easy to drink though.

Lovely aged port, gorgeous dried herb and earth nose, plenty of fruit still. Luscious, rich ripe fruits blend perfectly with earth and caramel, very smooth, seamless. Perfect drinking now.
