Flight 1 - Palate Teaser (1 note)

White
1985 Domaine Maire Château-Chalon Réserve Catherine de Rye France, Jura, Château-Chalon

Dark gold in colour. Incredible sherry-like aromas of hazelnuts, tar, molasses. Very aromatic -- filled the room. Thick in the glass, bone dry on the palate. A fabulous wine, very intriguing. Would go best with cheeses, nuts.

Flight 2 - First Flight of Reds (4 notes)

Red
2008 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Beautiful showing. Lovely nose of red fruits, some tobacco. Beautiful sweetness on the palate, balanced by soft tannins and very good acidity. Drinking now.

Significant VA made it so that this bottle showed remarkably poorly compared with the last bottle of this I had in December.

Great showing. Third favourite wine. Lovely expression of Chambertin. Showing some complexity on the nose, lovely balance and length on the palate. This is a food wine, but very enjoyable.
Red
2008 Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Gaudium Gran Vino Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
93 points
This is a more New World style Rioja. Dark appearance, thick in the glass. Black fruits and cedar dominate on the nose. Long and lush on the palate. A lovely wine. Drinking now, will improve.

Flight 3 - Second Flight of Reds (5 notes)

Red
2005 E. Guigal Ermitage Ex-Voto France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Outstanding! Drinking now with a good decant. Floral aromas, with red and black fruits and decent complexity. Impeccably balanced on the palate. Almost made it into the top three wines.
Red
2005 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Nose dominated my mint and eucalyptus, and well as chambord liqueur / raspberry jam. Balanced on the palate, but a little disjointed. Drinking now.

This wine is singing. Dark colour, intoxicating aromas of tobacco, cedar, black fruits, lead pencil, rain on hot rocks. On the palate, focused fruit with impeccable balance. Brilliant. Drink now with a good decant, or anytime in the next 10 years.
Red
2006 Delas Frères Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very lovely. Ruby-purple in colour. Huge nose of black fruits, meat, smoke, tobacco. Gorgeous fruit on the palate, with amazing balance. Starting to drink now, with a good decant. Second-favourite wine of the tasting.

Flight 4 - Closer (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Le Haut-Lieu France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Golden straw colour. Beguiling nose of quince, white flowers. Off-dry, a great match for a cheese course. Many suggested this was the best chenin blanc they had ever had. Drinking now.
