Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier France, Champagne
90 points
Derrald started the dinner with this bottle stored in his cellar for some time. Medium amount of tiny bubbles, nice mousse, immediate floral notes on the nose with brioche, touch of honey, slate, and apple salad, same on the palate, medium/big body, very tasty, medium/long finish.

Derrald also brought from his cellar this Champagne, served second, with a nose of minerals, lemon zest, lime zest, candied fruit, sliced apple, allspice, and spring flowers, more of the same on the palate, crisp, sweet mineral driven fruit on the palate, mouth filling, showing its age but not tired at all, sweet honey taste, big body, very elegant, and long, long mineral finish.

Red
1999 Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
All 4 Red burgundy wines poured together with this tasted first, nose of black currants, both red and black cherry fruit, mushroom, and hints of spring flowers and earth, same on the palate, medium body, young, rich, and clean tasting when compared to its peers tonight, tasty but a touch simple, will easily last another 7 years, and a medium/long finish, fourth place. I note 16 bottles are listed in cellars, suggest you drink up unless you like old Red Burgundy.
Red
1993 Louis Jadot Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
94 points
Mike brought a terrific bottle and on the wine label it states "Le Musigny" although recent vintages and the Jadot website show wine labels only with "Musigny" stated, wonderful nose of red and black cherry fruit, allspice, cranberry, currants, and floral notes of mums, medium/big body, silky, rich fruit, mouth filling, about 2 years to its peak, elegant tasting, and a long, long, flavorful finish.Third place.
Red
1979 Georges Lignier et Fils Clos St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
97 points
I brought this bottle to the tasting, one left in the cellar for another day, immediately impressive old style nose of leather, cedar, smoke, grilled bacon fat, red and black fruit and mushrooms, the nose did not fade during the 3 hour dinner, same on the palate, big body, an amazing 38 year old Red Burgundy, with air this wine became richer and sweeter, it produced favorable comments from everyone, elegant, brings back memories of many other old Burgundy wines enjoyed. First place.
Red
1966 Jules Belin Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
95 points
I brought this wine and exchanged it with Bill for a bottle of Chateau du Tertre. Nose of sweet and sour cherry fruit, both red and black cherry fruit, plum, sage, Mrs. Dash herbs, and bacon fat, same on the palate, this bottle was slightly corked which added to the complexity, the cork taint expanded as the evening went on but was not a negative to the taste, medium/big body, almost elegant, delicious, mouth filling fruit, and a medium/long finish. At 51 years of age, this wine is going strong and should easily last another decade but why wait? Second place.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
95 points
I brought this bottle to finish the dinner and encourage some conversation and reflection. Served at room temperature. Nose of white peach, nectarine, slate, shale, honey, and mango, same on the palate, medium/big body, mineral and honey driven taste, not cloying but rich and fruity, elegant, savory, great for sipping and a flavorful finish to the dinner. favorable comments from all and brought up the discussion of the 1975 and 1976 vintages of Chateau Rieussec.
