chez moi

Introduction

tasting 2007 chateauneuf - very disappointing - the mood around the table was such, that I restrained from scoring the wine, afraid to be more negative than fair...

Flight 1 (27 notes)

White
2007 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Tradition France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Mineral and dry, but still lively and quite elegant. Better with food... #from AD

2007 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
A bit petillant, juicy, very much Grenache; there is a cooked note here, also – a bit disappointing. Still alive on day 2, but very, very rich – like the vintage.
Red
2007 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône Les Quartz France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Sunny side up, here, lots of juice – but a wee bit pruny, whichs put me off somewhat.
Red
2007 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Grenache galore, one of the best here with good freshness; richer than usual, growns even bigger in the glass, but keeps the balance, well done. (provinence A. Devald)

2007 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medium coloured, half way mature looking; the taste is mineral and cool, very in the style of this cuvee, and the heat pf 07 is not very evident. It lacks a little on terms of length, but the coolness is great; might dry out, I fear initially, but it is very much alive in day 2, no signs of fatigue whatsoever. Bravo.
Red
2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Oh dear; this is full, rich well balanced – and very young. Approachable, certainly, but not yet a real B. The creamy fruit of the 2007 is shining through. Big backbone (later a note repeated by others) here … will be long lived.

2007 Domaine des Sénéchaux Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Dark, rustic, maybe even a wee bit clumsy; loads of dark fruit, manly power, well made, nut lacking elegance – to drink with food. More juicy, with air, rich, still, alcohol showing, certainly – and on day 2 erases the local feel.
Red
2007 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Red core, just slightly fading at the rim. High alcohol detectable from the get-go, quite sweet, quite Grenache, very much the sunny year here. Polished wine, still very much alive on day 2, but my, oh my, the alcohol.

2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Somewhat closed initially, but detectable as Pégau with its iron and beef blood, lighter than expected (compared to the Vieille Julienne). Grows in the glass, more concentration, better balance, finds itself, the domaine beats the vintage; one of the best on the night. (Provinence Adam F)

2007 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Label says only Bersino; fresh and very good, easy to drink, juice is in the house, and this is very difficult not to like; right now more appealing than the Felix, appealing in a bistro sort of way, it is airy with good local feel. Very good freshness, consistent notes on day 2. Wine me up ...

2007 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Old fashioned at first glamce; the fruit is in the background (it’s there, certainly), the terroir, garrigue, Provence is in the front. An antithesis to the Clos St. Jean, very charming, very local, still, alcohol is very present, burning almost, even more so on day 2 - now really sad.

2007 Domaine de Reveirolles Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Simple , fruity, drinkable, forgetable... drink up, if you have it.
Red
2007 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Quite rich –pruny – almost – tannins here, but very far from the firm quality I have so often found in vintages like 2001; the vintage speaks - again.

2007 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Intense and juicy in a quite cool style – so well made. Surprisingly ready, the vintage speaks. On day 2 the alcohol is really hitting, all joy has left it. Yes, the vintage speaks, I fear... we shall see.

2007 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very much a true neuf with a cool, mineral side to it, I like that. Plenty of garrigue here, plenty of primary fruit, still young, and not yet a classic Vieux Donjon. Still juicy – everyone hates this – cant wait to serve it blind someday fior the guys. Fresh –but rich, yes – more richesse than VD usually shows – let’s see, the balance is ok.

2007 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Medical nose – is there a doctor present? Even nailpolish…. Initially somewhat petillant, evaporates, though, on day 2. Grenache is in da house with sweet notes galore, adult mineral aftertaste, but the bitternes and alcohol persists.
Red
2007 Domaine de Pignan Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Alcohol here – quite marquee. Juice, yes, but this needs to be served cold to keep the vintage down. Made to impress. Falls apart after an hour, more or less dead on day 2.
Red
2007 Domaine de Cristia Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Rustic, yes, rich, yes, very dark with licorice-notes – but, albeit, is a true neuf and better than his more prestigious cuvées. Still, it is dark, rough, lacks the embracing charm of the appellation. Not a favorite tonite, nor was it ever, to be truthful - a dry one, this.

2007 Domaine de la Côte de l'Ange Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Candy-like fruit, rich – seems overdone; gets more creamy, inviting but lots of kirsch here. Was a favorite among the bad tempered tasters, not sure why, maybe because there is a little bit of lightness here, that other wine3 were lacking. Just a wee bit tired on day 2, alcohol persists though.
Red
2007 Château Fortia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Baron France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
When you know what this is, it is not very difficult to pick up; rich, yet stony, cool style, not bad at all, this cuvee seems to be doing well in rich vintages. Years to go, but again, this is trying quite hard. Alcohol, as is the case with many of its peers, seems even stronger on day 2
Red
2007 Domaine Tour Saint-Michel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Lion France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
rich, very sweet, well made, but no local feel here, just alcohol & kirsch galore. Keeps going like that… on day 2, it is real, real gone.
Red
2007 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure Rouge France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Still fermenting.... arrrrghhhhh – undrinkable, consistent with former notes on CT. It DOES getter better on the next day (bottle left open), but it is still not done fermenting; is this 17 percent alcohol or something? On day 3 after opening, it has calmed down, still: I loved the 2004 (courtesy of the same cellar), so I am blaming the vintage here...
Red
2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Petillant, almost, very young, fruity - wait for it! lots of matter here, but also a real Clos de Papes grip. This will be good in 5-10 years, I am sure of it – retasting on day 2 (very last of the bottle) confirms as much.

2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very much in the style of the domaine – rich, very rich – but very well made. The fruit is creamy and concentrated, and while you would not mistake this for a Burgundy, it is not factory-made - there is plenty of Châteauneuf-terroir here, placed in the hands of a very good winemaker. Would not mind having a case of this, and if I served it for the bad boys, it would be gone fast. Still very good on day 2, although just a wee bit pruny.

2007 Domaine Matthieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Marquis Anselme Matthieu France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Pruny; overdone, very rich. Not undrinkable, but no joy either. This one is trying to hard. Forget it.
Red
2007 Domaine Jean Royer Grenache Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Kirsch galore – seems overdone. Initially not as bad as all that, but the 16 percent is felt, and it is hard to drink, even for a Grenache-lover. I do not see it coming around, this is modern monster, made for Americans and lovers of Australian wine; if this reminds me of anything, it is the wines from Wild Duck creek – the Duck Muck from late harvested grapes, too much, too much...
Red
2007 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Sixtine France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The high alcohol has turned into a bit of a medicine-cabinet here, but there is a lightness to the wine, that is promising - maybe after a bit of air; ok on day 2, but tight as a drum, still. Not crazy about this, but not as bad, as they say.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White
2013 Zind-Humbrecht Chardonnay Clos Windsbuhl France, Alsace
92 points
Vibrant and elegant, yet with a creamy texture and a concentrated core of fruit; would have guessed Burgundy for sure, QI - quite interesting. #fromHSA
