Flight 1 (17 notes)

White
2015 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Apples, white flowers, wax, mineral, slight licorice/fennel; solid and uncomplicated.
Red
2009 Azienda Agricola San Giuseppe Brunello di Montalcino Stella di Campalto Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
See through crimson, pretty color with orange rim; smoked meat, roses, strawberry, cherry, orange peel, slight leather; good intensity on the palate, solid mid palate strength, softer grip, cinnamon, spice, a bit linear, cherry liqueur, smoky mineral; seems like a very cool climate wine, called Ferrando Carema; very pretty wine.
White
2010 Chanson Père & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Bright golden yellow; crystalline nose of mineral, honey, lemon and its zest, somewhat restrained nose, very serious; more snap on the palate, good intensity and focus, slight butter and nuttiness, lemon, zesty and bright showing great palpable mineral; still tense on the palate and nose not yet showing their best, still quite delicious.
Red
2013 Domaine Lombard Hermitage Maison Lombard France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Dark opaque core with thin plum rim; some reduction, violets, blowing Northern Rhone characteristics, lavender, meaty, peppered beef, some herbs; not the weight on the palate I expected as this was more elegant, fresh acid, a little mineral, fresh, tasty and very easy to drink; called 2011 Barret Coulet Cornas.
Red
2001 Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
Black core with thin brown rim, reminds me of used motor oil, obviously not the most attractive looking wine...but there is a saying about judging a book and a cover; soy, modern, new oak, maple syrup, leaves, interesting, caramel, prune, dill, raisins, dill, lots of balsamic notes; resolving tannin though still firm, aged, brandy warmth, lots of leather, a bit taxing to drink a lot of so save towards end of the meal and enjoy with blue cheese or by itself; very unique and good wine, this may not be for everyone but it is very much the style, also nailed it.

Red
2008 Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Cloudy crimson core with large orange rim; deeply rose laden nose, dried cherry, leather, sandalwood, slight balsamic, seamless and luxurious, mahogany, modern; silkier tannin, modern notes continue onto the palate, roses, sweet cherry liqueur, generous mouthfeel; very nice.
Red
1998 Antinori Solaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Dark opaque core with dull crimson rim; brown sugar, big, mahogany, meaty, beef stock, herb edge, currants, menthol, dock, cedar; very silky tannins, sappy on entry, some acid, sandy note, chocolate covered cherries; solid, most were in Super Tuscan but not this level or this aged.

Red
2012 Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos Ribera del Duero Torralvo Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Immensely black core with bright magenta rim; intense nose, boysenberry, mulberry, inky, violets, wants to have black pepper, opulent, cassis, plump fruit and strong vanilla in background; juicy dark fruit on the palate, lighter than expected, good acid and surprising amount of freshness, meaty, mineral, brandy warmth; different but good.
Red
2011 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Dull crimson, light rim; pretty nose, floral, stemmy greenness, sour cherry, leather; very nice on the palate, pure cherry, spicy, cinnamon, fresh acid, good balance overall, note super long, some green but doesn't dominate; 2011 NSG or Vougeot was my call.
Red
2011 E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Mosconi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Dark crimson, onion skin rim, lots of chunky sediment towards bottom of bottle; sexy nose, plush new oak, candied rose, sweet cherry, touch of sulfur but great purity and prettiness; leather on the palate, subtle grip, soft and sexy, pure cherry, sweet strawberry, subtle smoky note; I knew right away this was the Mosconi since having it 3 days prior.

Red
2010 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Hominis Fides France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Very dark core with dull crimson rim; black olive, tanned leather, roasted fruit, fresh but some age, black pepper; ripe roasted fruit on the palate, menthol, olives, leather; we were all in Northern Rhone, though delicious I felt it could have shown a bit fresher.
Red
2010 Edmond Cornu & Fils Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Dark crimson core, clarity, lighter rim; sweet nose, blueberry, floral, red fruit, liqueur, herbs, nori; good structure, menthol, cranberry, firm acid, grip comes in late; we were all thrown on this one too.
Red
2001 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Dark core with brick rim; meaty, red fruit, roses, smoke, currant, leather, cabbage, earth, clay and iron; resolving tannin, cigar tobacco, earth, sour cherry, currants, green pepper and vegetal notes blend in well; was in St Estephe.
Red
2009 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Dark ruby core with lighter rim; volatile, some sulfur, fresh nose, sweet new oak; fresher red fruit on the palate, spicy, raspberry, sour dark cherry, nice grip, young; very misdiagnosed by group.
Red
2011 Pecchenino Barolo Le Coste Di Monforte Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
See through crimson with orange rim; orange and cherries, leather, dried roses; menthol, cedar, firm grippy tannin; too young.
Red
1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
What smelled of cork blew off with extended air in the glass; this showed very nice balance, rich darker fruit, chocolate, classic Bordeaux character, drinking well; previous bottle showed cork taint as it sat where this seemed to blow right off.
Red
2004 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna d'la Roul Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Currants, sour cherry, menthol, cedar, aged, seemed older than 2004, more modern; still tasty and we all pegged it for Barolo.

Closing

A really fun night with way too much wine. Starters, second wines, backups, and backups to the backups got opened tonight.
My top 3: 1- Grivot Vougeot, 2- Stella di Campalto BdM Riserva, 3- my Chanson Clos des Mouches Blanc

Top 5 was may have had similar wines for many but the orders were mainly all different.
