Introduction

Blind tasting. Right Bank, Left Bank, or non-Bordeaux Bordeaux-blend?

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2001 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
Tasted blind. Had been poured into decanter. Lots of sediments. Drank over 3 hours.
Appearance murky, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of mushroomy earth, mint, metallic minerality, black cherries, red cherries, slight soy sauce. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet dark red plums, black cherries, leather, mushroom earth, mint. Long finish.
Very good quality. Easily guessed this as a SuperTuscan amongst the Bordeaux line-up of the night.
Drinking very well now. Let it stand for a day or two to let the sediment settle.
Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
Red
2001 Château Le Gay Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Very good quality. Elegant Right Banker. Nice meat on the nose, refined on the palate. Time to drink up and enjoy.
Red
2010 Bodega Catena Zapata Nicolás Catena Zapata Argentina, Mendoza
91 points
Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of smoke, black pepper, vanilla, dark herbs, blackberries, sweet candy/bubble gum spices. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), puckery high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla, coconut, black pepper, smoke, blackberries, blackcurrant, sweet candy spice. Polished overall feel and concentrated black fruit. Long finish.
Good quality. Obviously not a real Bordeaux. Was guessing a Languedoc Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend with some other grape varietal making up the remainder.
Give this another 4-5 years to integrate.
75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Malbec.

Very good quality. Can still develop for another 5+ years.
Good mouth-feel, soft and elegant classic claret feel on the palate. Was expecting something riper for the 2000 vintage though. Bad QPR. Not worth the price.
Day 2: Emergence of some chocolate notes. Pencil lead more apparent. Green herbs slightly receding. Well, better but still no X-factor.

Very very good quality. Balanced. Silky velvety elegance. Showing extremely well now. In drinking window and will go on to develop nicely over the next 5 years. Many of us were guessing this was the La Fleur Petrus (which was frankly a bit disappointing given the expectations).
