PWS; Chasse Spleen plus a few extra's

Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.

Today two people brought a Chasse Spleen 2010, not knowing that from each other and we tasted the wines blind. We were with three persons and no-one thought we had the same wine in the glass. So for this reason I post both notes seperately.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2000 Château Poujeaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
90 points
In the bouquet leather, tobacco, autumn forest, dark berries, cherries, plums, anise, graphite, tobacco and a touch of barnyard. On the palate dark and red berries, vanilla, a touch of sweetness, fresh acidity, licorice, round and slightly sticky tannin. Overall a complex and elegant wine which still improves in the glass. It is lovely and complete, but medium bodied and for a 2000 that is a little bit disappointing, certainly compared with Chasse Spleen.

Concentrated color with still a purple hue. Beautiful bouquet which is still a bit locked, but shows dark forest fruits, vanilla and some smoke. On the palate juicy dark forest fruits and cherries, vanilla, sweet spices like cinnamon, beautiful oak, some pepper and caramel. Overall a full bodied and still powerful wine which even had gained on day two. The wine is still in the first half of its maturity stage and will age well until at least 2023+.

Bottle 1: Beautiful dark forest fruits like blackberries, vanilla, good complexity, but still locked. On the palate concentrated and juicy dark forest fruits and cassis, juicy acidity, chocolate, vanilla, sweet and salty licorice, laurel and graphite. Overall a beautiful wine which is still locked and too young. Around 2027 this will be much more friendly, complex and refined. For tonight 91, for the future 93+, So I score it 92.

Bottle 2: Beautiful dark forest fruits, some smoke, sweet licorice and bell pepper. On the palate the same dark fruits and bell pepper, vanilla, juicy acidity and some bitterness. Slightly sticky tannin. Overall a beautiful and still youthful wine which needs another 10+ years at least. (It is not my habit to write two notes about one wine on one day, but in this case it were two bottles poured blind and tasted beside each other. Three tasters and none had the idea he was tasting the same wine.)

Pnp. In the bouquet dark forest fruits and vanilla, but in fact the bouquet is still quite locked. On the palate dark forest fruits, a lot of vanilla, chocolate and marzipan. Sweet spices. Full bodied. Modern made and a very beautiful wine. Will probably open up a bit around 2020 and still be lovely around 2028+, but there will be a follow-up before that time.

In the bouquet creamy dark and red forest fruits and vanilla. Same on the palate, some chocolate, firm but beautiful acidity and round, still powerful tannin. The wine is still much too young, but it is beautifully balanced and holds a promise for the future. Around 2025 this probably will be a refined and beautiful wine. 92++ for today.
