Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
1995 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc des Millénaires France, Champagne
94 points
(Lot code beginning '14'; probably 2014 disgorgement).

This was one of the best bottles so far. The colour was beautiful gold and the bubbles were pretty healthy for a wine of this age. The nose was waxy and slightly honeyed with a bit of almond and something that I want to almost describe as woody (but there's no oak used here.) The palate had a lithe milkiness with a bit of butter and a long nutty finish.

White - Sparkling
2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne
91 points
Disgorged Sep. 2012

We had this before dinner at the table in the restaurant. It felt a bit clumsy at first in the wake of the Heidsieck, but the nose showed a nice display of yeast and hazelnut. There are differing views on here as to whether or not this is ready to drink but I'll be holding the rest of mine for a while.

White
2014 Ataraxia Chardonnay South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
This showed well as an example of a new-world chard, but needs a couple of years to settle down. The oak and fruit seemed to be singing from a different sheet.
Red
2009 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto
I took this to La Trompette and we all ended up eating duck, for which this wine was too heavy.

It's got some real depth to it, but needs a few more years or some weighty food if you want to open it now.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2014 Château La Rame Sainte Croix du Mont France, Bordeaux, Entre-Deux-Mers, Sainte Croix du Mont
Decent QPR. Nice marmlade notes with some old-world minerality.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut France, Champagne
Showed ok with the usual Bolly nut and red apple notes. Very dry, so probably would have shown better at the beginning of the evening.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
This was one of the bottles we opened after getting back from La Trompette. We were a bit drunk by the time we got to it. It was easier to asses the following morning and showed very well.
