Introduction

9 people stepped up for a great tasting at Tilia. The wines were all very good. WOTN was the 1989 Dunn Howell Mountain, but voting was very close.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2000 Lanson Champagne Noble Cuvée de Lanson Brut France, Champagne
92 points
This bottle was slightly better than the one I opened recently. Or, more likely, I had a better opportunity to sit and evaluate the wine, as this was a sit-down dinner with 8 others. I really enjoyed the toasty aspect of the initial attack that then progressed to a very energetic, mineral and acid-driven palate.
White
2012 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
88 points
Decent chardonnay, but nothing stands out. I really couldn't get into this wine. It definitely did not taste like Montrachet to me. Interesting that we were a table of 9, the 4 of us on one side didn't care for it while the other 5 on the other side absolutely adored it.
White
1991 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Pop and pour. As nice as this was, it was about the same experience as other Lopez Reserva whites I've had that were significantly younger. I was hoping for more complexity and didn't really get that, but it was quite solid and consistent with the oxidative, dry, mineral, lemon oil style.

Red
1990 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Medium-bodied, nice to drink a CDP that isn't over the top, but this seems like it might have faded a bit. While I enjoyed it, it didn't excel into the exceptional range to me.
Red
2001 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Pop and pour. This wine is big and brooding, but not jammy or alcoholic like so many CDP's. A little tangy acidity. I had no trouble drinking this.
Red
1999 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Cinquantenaire France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Enjoyable, but this wine seemed surprisingly modern in style. Big with dill and red fruit.
Red
2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
I like Pegau, and this was a great representation of them in a good year. Fruit and funk, a little tar, cherries and berries.
Red
2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
While not a blockbuster, this wine was vibrant and fruity. A touch of green, some oak, but mostly spice and fruit.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
1989 Clos l'Église (Pomerol) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
90 points
Slow o'd a couple hours. The CORK was corked. It reeked of TCA, such that even smelling the open bottle from the neck, it smelled corked. The wine itself was not corked. It was a fairly mellow Pomerol, lots of tobacco, earth, a touch of tar. This wine is probably on the wrong side of the peak, but there's definitely a couple years left to enjoy them.
Red
1989 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
92 points
JCGUTHRIE's bottle. I felt this cab wasn't as old school as it should have been. Mostly fruit, spice and fine tannins. No leather or earth.
Red
2006 Staglin Family Ineo USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
93 points
I really enjoyed this blend. I felt that the Cabernet Franc gave it an elegance, and a lean aspect. This was much more balanced than I was expecting. Flashy red to black fruit.
Red
2009 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
90 points
I've had several Myriad, and this is a very good Myriad. To me, this is a great representation of the over-the-top Napa cocktail wine style that is very popular right now. Whether you like that style or not will dictate whether you like this wine and/or how many points you give it.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
91 points
Exactly where it was 7 months ago. Pleasant enough, has a lot going for it, but this producer usually has more elegance and depth.
