Krug and Dom Perignon Dinner, with Bonus Wines

The Loyalist - Chicago IL

Tasted July 6, 2017 by Burgundy Al with 751 views

Introduction

Dinner hosted by a great LVMH friend to taste and discuss some new releases from their premier brands, as well as to revisit a few their best wines currently in the market. Some other friends were dining in the adjacent Private Dining space, so we got to partake of some of their fine beverages as well.

Flight 1 - Krug and Dom Perignon (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
1998 Dom Pérignon Champagne P2 France, Champagne
93 points
Ripe orchard fruit with some sweet spice and toasted baguette, then some faint lemon rind hints on the finish. Very good for the medium-term.

White - Sparkling
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Served alongside the 1995 vintage, which oddly seemed to detract from how much I enjoyed BOTH wines. This was rich and very concentrated to start with so much orchard fruit, modestly maturing. Middle seemed so driven by structure with energy and slightly less fruit, then everything combined nicely on the finish.

White - Sparkling
1995 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
92 points
From magnum. Served alongside the 1996 vintage, which oddly seemed to detract from how much I enjoyed BOTH wines. Very firmly structured and very long, with much less robust fruit vs 1996, but lots of great minerally textures.

Rosé - Sparkling
2005 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé France, Champagne

My first time trying this wine. Soft and very berry focused with elegant textures. Moderate weight and length. Very enjoyable and fun.

Rosé - Sparkling
1996 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé P2 France, Champagne
95 points
Ripe red cherries and berries everywhere. This comes across as big and powerful, brawny and slightly backward, maybe even a bit awkward today. but there is so much great substance here. 94 points for tonight, 96 point potential.

Rosé - Sparkling
1995 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé P2 France, Champagne
94 points
Leaner and more elegant vs 1996, also more accessible. Forward and beautifully balanced. Lots or red berries with floral hints and savory spice. Moderate power. Not a hair out of place.
White - Sparkling
1988 Dom Pérignon Champagne P3 France, Champagne
95 points
First time with this release. I had certainly enjoyed the DP 1988 "P1" release for many years, but more recent bottles seemed long-in-the-tooth, but were perhaps ill stored. This P3 gem is a masterpiece. Very densely concentrated with plenty of surprisingly fresh orchard fruit. Nuanced throughout with a long and powerful finish.

Flight 2 - Bonus Wines, Mostly from the Next Room (8 notes)

White
2004 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
Another oxidized bottle. My 7th in a row over the past 7 years, from various different sources and cases.

Red
2014 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
90 points
Ripe red and black cherry comes across as almost jammy right now, but there is just is much baby fat here that should quickly get resolved. Spice hints throughout with very good weight and concentration for its level. An expanding finish is particularly for Villages level. Better 2020-.

Red
2007 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
89 points
Maturing red fruit with spice hints and fairly firm tannins on finish. Not quite as interesting or "Vosne" as another bottle from last year, but in both cases it is clear this is a wine best to consume over the next 3-5 years. I will have to open one of my bottles sometime later this year to see if equally firm.

Red
1989 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Great aromatic start with black plum and currant, rich without seeming too ripe. Cigarbox and cassis notes as well. Great nose is followed by good flavors that are quite similar and enticingly complex, just perhaps not quite as long as a few great bottles from the past few years, since this wine has emerged from its long (15+ year?) post-release dormancy.

Red
1990 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Ripe black fruit with some sweet spice and liqueur hints. Somewhat monolithic, so far less interesting vs the 1989.

Slightly corked.

2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Black cherry, fresh black berries, macerated black berries and some liqueur hints with sweet spice. Big, ripe and powerful but just seamless towards long finish. So glad I have two 6-packs stashed away in the cellar. So good right now, but I think another five years in the cellar will be well rewarded.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Rich apricot, both dried and fresh. Very powerful and sweet, but less nuanced vs some great bottles from the past. This wine should last for decades.
