Introduction

The August event featured various wines paired with appetizers prepared by Chef Brandy Fernow, a personal chef and caterer in Batavia. www.personalchefbrandy.com

Flight 1 (1 note)

The King Estate was poured as attendees arrived.

White
2005 King Estate Pinot Gris USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
85 points
Certified organic, this is done in 100% stainless. Pale yellow color with notes of honeysuckle flowers and cotton, followed by soft citrus tones. Flavors of pears, apple and minerals, with a slightly tinny tone on the finish.

Flight 2 - First pairing. (1 note)

Smoked Salmon Spirals with Dill Creme Fraiche. The dish was okay, but I felt the lemon zest used in the creme fraiche was overpowering. The wine helped tone down the citrus, but not nearly enough.

White
2005 Talbott Chardonnay Kali Hart USA, California, Central Coast, Monterey
Aged in both stainless and neutral French oak barrels. Soft yellow color with aromas of minerals, fig and a soapy/floral note. Decent fruit flavors of apple and pear, with a slight smokiness on the somewhat rich finish.

Flight 3 - Second pairing. (1 note)

Braised Meatballs in Tomato & White Wine Sauce. The meatballs contained beef, turkey and bacon, and were a bit soft. The flavor was very good though, and the sauce was a nice touch. Decent pairing with the flavors and acidity of the Vietti.

Red
2005 Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti
88 points
Deep ruby to garnet color. Aromas of spice, plum and rose petals. Firm, dryings tannins and decent acidity on the palate. Flavors of spice, pepper and plum.

Flight 4 - Third pairing. (1 note)

No dish was served as Brandy's kitchen was without power due to the fierce storms that blew through the area that afternoon. The scheduled pairing was Bacon Wrapped Figs with Pomegranate Glaze.

Red
2005 Girard Winery Petite Sirah USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Opaque. Aromas of cassis, blackberry and blueberry with a hint of mineral. Firmly tannic and massive, as expected, with black and blue fruit and a touch of brown sugar. Better than the 2004. 90-92.

Flight 5 - Fourth pairing. (1 note)

Mexican Chocolate Brownies with Spiced Whipped Cream. The brownies conatined spiced Mexican chocolate, which were very nice. Just a bit too chewy for my liking, but very good flavor. The chocolate/chocolate pairing was rich.

Red - Fortified
N.V. Trentadue Winery Merlot Chocolate Amore USA, California
Deep garnet color. Aroma of raw cocoa powder and tastes like Hershey's syrup.
