White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Kalin Cellars Cuvée d'Or USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley

Golden color. Sweet honeyed tropical fruit and flowers on the nose and the palate. Wonderful lingering finish which stays with you forever. Great balancing act between the sweetness and the acidity. Excellent!

Flight 2 - INSIGNIAS (11 notes)

Medium red with a slightly orange rim. Big nose... unfortunately it wasn't very pleasant. A little green, with what appeared to be some "vinegary" aromas (volatile acidity?). Rather mild taste, which was a lot better than the nose. Over time, this wine deteriorated rapidly. This swift downward spiral was NOT a pretty sight to behold. Brave (masochistic?) souls kept going back to check if the depraved aromas would "blow-off". No such luck. A sulphuric component started to creep into this evil mix. A sinister wine. Move along folks... there's nothing to see here...

Deep ruby color. Nice aromas of black fruits, spice, and eucalyptus. A pleasant wine, but a disturbingly short finish. Again, over time, I felt this wine lost some of it's charm. Good.

Sweet fruit nose with a bit of herbs and earthiness to add complexity. Nice long, fruity finish. My only complaint was the low acidity. Seems to be peaking. With breathing, the wine improved. Very good.

Unusual soy sauce and peppery aromas. Nice concentration of fruit. A pleasant but odd wine. Good.

Mint, herbs, cassis and red fruits on the nose. Nice mouth-feel. Not bad, given the vintage. Short finish. Good.

A nice showing for a mediocre vintage. Cassis and spice, but a bit hot and alcoholic. Low tannis, low acid. A nice wine, but should probably be drunk soon. Good.

Nice youthful, purple color. Fine fresh black fruits. A bit monolithic right now. Shows promise. Very good.

Wow! Deep purple. Wonderful nose of cassis, herbs, spice and vanilla. Very concentrated, very youthful. Great mouth-feel. Wonderful balance of fruit, tannins, acid, and alcohol. A beautiful wine that drinks great now but will surely get better with age. I wish I had some in my cellar. With some breathing, the nose did seem to close up a bit. Excellent.

Nice aromas of black fruits, herbs and licorice. Excellent concentration, but I couldn't help noticing a bit of heat on the palate. Nice fruity, herbal finish. Very good.

Cassis, bell pepper, herbs, toasted oak. A pronoucned herbal streak that was not as evident in other Insignia vintages of the 90's I tasted. Still, a nice wine that is just in infant in terms of development. Will the herbal streak go away with time in the bottle? Pleasant spicy finish. Very good.

A truly mind-blowing wine, totally out-classing other Insignia's tasted at this vertical. This is my second tasting of this wine, and it seems to be getting better. A perfect balance of deep, piercing fruit with a solid backbone of tannins to ensure a long life. Wonderful secondary aromas of cedar and herbs (just enough to make it interesting, not herbaceous). Did I mention the explosive nose of crystallized cassis and spice? I could smell this wine all night. It got even better with an hour of breathing. Killer finish. Gosh I'm glad I have this wine in my cellar. So young, but oh so good! Profound.

Flight 3 - MISC REDS (5 notes)

Red
1996 Turley Zinfandel Old Vines USA, California

Medium red color. Spicy, zinny fruit. Red fruits. Medium concentration, but slightly hot and alcoholic.
Red
1995 Turley Zinfandel Black Sears Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
90 points
Dark purple red color. Rich ripe black raspberries, pepper and spice. Long finish, but a bit of heat on the finish.
Red
1995 Saddleback Cellars Zinfandel Old Vines USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Dark purple color. Thick, jammy, black raspberry nose and palate. Ripe and delicious with a long finish. Excellent.
Red
1996 Rabbit Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker's Grand Reserve USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
91 points
Healthy dark color. Expressive aromas of black fruit, earth and spice. Rich and thick, but a bit low in acid and a bit high on oak, although the fruit does manage to barely handle the oak. A short term drinker.
Red
1996 Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
Medium red in color. Very red berry nose. Strawberry and spice on the palate. Interesting, but not very Zin-like in character.

Flight 4 - DESSERT (1 note)

Red - Sweet/Dessert
1994 Cline Cellars Zinfandel Late Harvest USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County
94 points
Dark blue/purple color. Great concentration, like a fine port. Sweet overripe plums and black raspberries, nicely balanced by acids. A great late harvest Zin.
