Introduction

Our local group convened to check-in on the great 2000 Bordeaux vintage.

Unbelievably, a completely random sample of 11 individuals' cellars turned up four bottles of the Lagrange St. Julien ... and, for me, none of them disappointed. This is a wine that is showing lovely in its relative youth.

Otherwise many of the right bankers, in particular the Monbousquet were already drinking well.

The bigger boys in the pack - Cos, Pape Clement and Montrose are not close to ready.

Certainly appears to be a great vintage - with select wines already showing pleasure ... in a big, brutish style.

Flight 1 - FLIGHT ONE (6 notes)

Red
2000 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
94 points
Dark ruby with a lovely, full and open nose that has currants, spice, tobacco leaf, dirt and herbs. Palate shows only medium body fruit and a wall of big tannins clamps down the mid palate. But what a nose --- a ton of potential here. My #3, Group #5.
Red
2000 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Dark ruby with a reticent, chalky nose. Palate has sweet fruit with herbs, minerality, spice and pencil lead. Very well balanced with fruit matching tannin and providing great length. Finish is full of floral and spice notes. My #4, Group #3.
Red
2000 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
90 points
Dark ruby with a reticent nose that flashes minerals and currants. Palate is full flavored but lacks delineation. Plenty of currant fruit and minerals. Fruit matches the tannin. Good length. Some simple pleasure is there but I gotta believe this isyears away from showing its stuff and complexity. My #6, Group #6.
Red
2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
96 points
Dark ruby with a ripping, complex, WOW nose that has currants, smoky minerals, tar, tobacco and herbs. Palate has full, rich, giving fruit with firm but suave tannins. Bursts with layers of flavors that echo the nose. Long flavorful finish. Already a complete pleasure to drink. My #1, Group #1.
Red
2001 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
92 points
Dark ruby with a toasty, caramel, chocolate-covered cherry nose. Medium bodied with rich, full flavors and pure fruits. Seamless and very well integrated. Long, full finish has currants, spice, minerals and toasty. Modernly styled and quite nice. My #5, Group #4.
Red
2000 Château Clos St. Martin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Dark ruby with an open, full and elegant nose. Aromas of tobacco, minerals and floral notes complement currants. Palate has an impressive entry with full, rich fruit. Green herbs and spice fill the mid palate. Great length features high class fruit - excellent! My #2, Group #2.

Flight 2 - FLIGHT TWO (6 notes)

Red
2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Full, open nose has sweet fruit, herbs and tobacco. Palate is bright and long. Spice, currants and black licorice. My #4, Group #3.
Red
2000 Château Monbousquet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
97 points
Unbelievable aromatics! Rich, sweet fruit with herbs, spice, tar, floral, mocha and judicious toast. Palate has a ton of everything - richness, balance, complexity and so on. Sweet, rich fruit with toasty oak, spice and herbs. Delicious, layered, long and complex. Helluva wine - damn near perfect. My #1, Group #1.
Red
2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
Full nose has rich currants herbs, spice and black licorice. Medium-to-full bodied palate is loaded with sweet, rich fruit, herbs, tobacco and spice. Long pure finish. Great balance of rich fruit and fine tannin. Excellent. My #2, Group #5.
Red
2000 Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Reticent nose. Palate is light-bodied with harsh astringent tannins. Currant fruits are overwhelmed. Tight, tannic and bitter. For me stood out as the only unenjoyable wine of the night. My #6, Group #4.
Red
2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
Killer, full, open nose has black fruit, tar, herbs and smoky minerals. Lush palate has rich fruit with minerals, spice and pencil lead. Fine tannins add balance and grip. Powerful and elegant. Long with layers of complexity and delicious, rich fruit. My #3, Group #2.
Red
2000 Château Matras France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Nose is floral, with sweet currants, modest smoke and toast. Palate echoes the nose with sweet fruit and violet notes. Tannins are still quite firm and compress the wine. Overall a nice effort with years of development ahead. My #5, Group #6.

Flight 3 - DESSERT (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1998 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Medium-to-full bodied and richly flavored. Loads of sweet white fruits, honey and botrytis. Elegant and long.
