Introduction

This presented the chance for me to get a good look at some of the higher end 07s and check out some producers that I haven't had before, and of course, to try the 06 Rayas

Flight 1 - Michel Gay (7 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Chorey-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
87 points
nose: nice straight forward nose of dark red fruits, spice tones and bits of earth. Good nose but lacking some depth

taste: good light body with medium acidity with dark cherries, bits of earth, spice and small berry tones

overall: a nice wine. Good pleasant feel with good acidity. Basically ready to go right now and isn't much for more aging
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
89 points
nose: really good depth and filling nose of dark spices, dark red fruits, dark cherries and very interesting meaty tones all work well together and cause intrigue

taste: delicious tones of dark spices, mineral rich earth, dark cherries, raspberries and lots of dark berries. Good medium/high acidity with great balance

overall: very young right now. Seemed to be in a semi-shut down phase as the flavors weren't as clear or singing and the aromatics were a bit tough to get much of. What is there right now is really good and this should improve significantly with 5 more years and be a real steal
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
nose: very dark profile with good depth and balance of dark spices, loads of red fruits, dark red cherries, bits of smoked game and a lovely touch of red florals. Much more open aromatically then the Les Serpentiers

taste: great lithe feel for such a young burg with excellent and balanced tones of of dark spices, dark red cherries, red florals and some very tart tones of raspberries with medium/high acidity showing its youth

overall: a terrific young burg. More open aromatically on the palate and nose then the Les Serpentiers at this point. Great length and feel that is classy now and should be lovely in a few years when it fully comes around
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Les Toussaints France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
88 points
nose: good nose of tart dark red fruits, loads of earth tones, minerals, and spices. Good medium depth and classic beaune

taste: very high acidity at this stage that is making it hard to get much from it. Some tones of dark red fruits, dark cherries and spice tones

overall: hard to fully evaluate at this time. The acidity is overbearing right now. There is a lot to like on the nose and what did come through on the palate was excellent. Just needs time at this stage and should develop nicely
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Coucherias Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
nose: nice darkish profile with meaty tones, bits of leather, red currants, dark spice and bits of black cherries. A bit brooding and rustic, but very pungent right now

taste: good medium/high acidity with a nice lush feel of dark red fruits, black cherries, some leather, dark spices, and red currants

overall: very beaune in style and character with a really nice dark backdrop. Enjoyable while being young, should be able to improve with time, but is extremely enjoyable right now
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
91 points
nose: good, rich nose of red cherries, red currants, tart red fruits and good undertones of mineral rich earth. excellent depth and purity with really good balance

taste: very high acidity with a good medium/light feel of mineral rich earth, spice tones, red cherries, and red fruits

overall: very good promise, and its really good right now. Has a bit of a bright and tart streak to it with riper flavors, but still very much a beaune and enjoyable
Red
2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Corton-Renardes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
92 points
nose: loaded nose of red cherries, black spices, crushed red florals, mineral rich earth and lush tones of red currants. Very classy with a lot of depth

taste: great length with grand cru class. Wonderful tones of red cherries, earth tones, bits of spice, and crushed red florals that is acompanied by medium/high acidity

overall: outstanding stuff. Very young, but has that class that you'd expect from a grand cru with the polish and length to go with it. Very young, but very promising

nose: nice straightforward nose of red cherries, spice tones, bits of earth and red fruits. Nice and balanced with decent depth

taste: good light feel with medium+ acidity providing tones of red cherries, red fruits and hints of spice

Red
2005 Domaine Chevalier Ladoix 1er Cru La Corvée France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix 1er Cru
90 points
nose: really good nose with excellent depth of black spices, dark red fruits, black cherries, black currants and raspberries. Very aromatic that is extremely pungent, but the youth of it makes it seem to be holding it back at this time

taste: very pretty feel with medium/high acidity that give way to tones of of black spices, dark red fruits, black cherries, and raspberries. Good depth and complexity, but its just too young at this time to really shine

Closing

I was short on time as I rushed over to the tasting after class, so I had to be choosy as to what I was going to taste. What was presented was really good and gave a great chance to check out a lot of burgs
