I’m not sure why everybody else was drinking, but this bottle was super hot on the alcohol. There was fruit, acid, blah, blah, blah (high level TN, I know) but the alcohol wasted the pleasure of this bottle, and that won’t improve.

flawed
This bottle was slightly stewed, maderized and perhaps grossly cooked.

Its fundamentals were present, though it was flawed. Oh well, Benchmark Wines, You have delivered a 6 pack that is flawed. It is perhaps 3/4 bottles of this 6 bottle lot I purchased. I took a flyer and appear to have lost.

Remarkably young for 2002. Very clean red color with no oxidation. Pretty typical Napa cab flavors. Decanted 2 hours. Recommend the same.

Traditional Rioja (RSJ, London): Under the centenary subtitled label. Similar nose to the 95. Plush, a little oaky. Fresher on the attack, but some breadth through the mid palate. Some coconut emerging on the nose with time. ****
  • jfont123 commented:

3/8/17, 7:59 AM - Do you think the oak would mellow out with a little bit more aging?

Darkish ruby with a savory nose of Himalayan blackberries. Tart red berry, bright fruit with some light cane tannins. Medium fruit and body and starting to come together and on the young side. I opened several nights ago and It was pretty primary so I set it aside. Last night three it turned the corner with the edges softening, the fruit showing red currants and sour cherries, earth, leather with a bit of balsam forest notes. Much more complex than the base '14 WV Pinots that I find are drinking well now. With the acid and tannins present, I'm looking forward to the development over the years.

Last of my bottles. Decanted 4 hours before pouring. Typical Barolo cherry, earthy flavor profile. Tannins very much under control after 11+ years. Paired perfectly with pork shank Osso Bucco, Risotto Milanese, roasted Romanesco and rainbow carrots. Guests drinking the Pio for the first time were highly impressed with the wine.... and the food pairing!!

A little disappointing considering this was a rebuy. Slight astringency but it might be that I don't really like Riojas
  • jfont123 commented:

12/24/14, 3:24 PM - I'm curious, since you really didn't like riojas, why the "rebuy"?

Awesome. Drinking well now.

An off bottle. Not undrinkable, but not showing much either. Starting to brick a bit at the rim. Graphite, a bit uf plum, and a big leather note, but really muted.
  • jfont123 commented:

4/24/14, 10:11 PM - IF its an off bottle, should have put flawed instead of scoring the wine..

Old world cab with a barnyard finish. I would suggest for steaks and let it sit for bit open. Not an everyday wine for just a glass...just too bold.
