Chateauneuf du Pape 2006 (@ VD): Beautiful and exclusive bouquet with dark and red berry fruits, soft garrigue and sweet licorice. On the palate juicy fruits, raisins, a lot of sweet spices like cinnamon, chocolate and melted and integrated tannin. Overall an intense and elegant, beautiful wine which is completely ready now, but no real hurry either. 92+

Very dark red/purple color. Initial PNP followed by a decant over 2 hours. This was an interesting experience tonight. It does not really seem like this has progressed any since I last had it a year and a half ago. Out of the bottle it was harsh and tannic with somewhat abrasive oak/spice - the nose was decent. Clearly needed to be decanted so I obliged. Sitting in the glass this at times it has a quite engaging nose as in the past, fresh and vibrant with lovely cassis, and dark berries, mulberry, graphite, damp earthiness, tobacco and spices. At other points it seems more reticent. The palate becomes more like what I expected, nicely textured, medium plus body, some tartness, cassis, mulberry, tobacco, graphite, chocolate, and spice. The tannins are quite firm and food is a benefit. Maybe this is in an awkward phase right now, as even with the decant, this had some Jekyll and Hyde moments. I highly recommend decanting for at least an hour, but while this certainly is approachable, I'd give this another couple years ideally.
  • cryptochrome commented:

2/24/14, 11:03 AM - Funny. I basically had the same experience, but that was back in 2011 (even put a note up here). Looks like this baby is progressing super slowly or not at all. I decided to give this a couple more years in the cellar. Doesn't seem ready to me.

  • cryptochrome commented:

2/7/14, 4:09 PM - Well since you are posting a public tasting note you are writing for an audience. An international audience. Have you seen the private tasting note option in CellarTracker? You might want to use that.

  • cryptochrome commented:

2/8/14, 2:55 AM - You are not the only one who is posting *public* tasting notes in a language that 99% of the community here does not understand. It's happening more and more often and it's quite annoying. It's anti-community and in fact even anti-social. Quite ignorant.

If people keep doing this, we will end up with a site where 30-40% of the tasting notes are in a language that you don't understand. Would you want that?

CellarTracker has an option to make your tasting notes private so that only you can see them and they have made this option for a reason. If you don't care that your notes are read by an audience, please consider making your notes private. Thanks.

  • cryptochrome commented:

2/8/14, 5:16 AM - I am making my notes private because I have the same issue like you: english is not my native tounge and I can't express myself in english good enough to make good tasting notes in that language. So I only rate with a score publicly (which contributes to the overall score and thus to the community) and keep my notes private. Because they are not in english ;)

And sorry if I insulted you with my words (anti-social) etc. - But this is simply how this comes across. Like someone coming to a party where everybody speaks english and you start talking to everybody in dutch. No offense.

This has come together very nicely since a closed/disjointed bottle about a year and a half ago. Decanted. The nose was quite expressive from the get-go. The tannins are in much better balance, and the sweetness has largely abated. Drinking well, though there is sufficient structure to make me think it has at least mid term cellaring potential. Past bottles 88-92 points. This bottle: 92, approaching a point higher

Hmm... Very very strange indeed. Typical Pinot light raspberry appearance, spicy nose of cloves and white pepper and then... an unusually earthy wine with a touch of carbonation! Almost like one of those weird "natural" wines that have the consistency of lager beer, but more refined. Good, firm acidity, elegant touch of oak, and a graceful balance between sweetness and pepperiness, with an attractive core of fresh strawberry fruit. Very good in fact, but not sure about this fizzy element... Maybe decanting and a bit of vigorous shaking is required? Too weird for me.
  • cryptochrome commented:

5/20/13, 12:52 PM - interesting! is it like bubbly fizzy? as in champaign or some of the cheap lambrusco?

5/20/13, 11:50 PM - Ok, I was so curious that I opened one of my bottles yesterday. I think I know what you mean now. I wouldn't call it fizz though. It's very mineral and earthy and that comes with it's own sensation. Hard to describe really, but not uncommon. And not wierd to me at all :) I really enjoyed it.

Not decanted but probably should have been... was pretty tight aromatically and on the palate initially, and I don't think it opened fully before we finished it.. dark fruits, nice acidity, a little bit of earthyness on the palate. A little meaty as well. Very balaned, not a big CA wine by any means despite being 14.9%. Good, but not great, but I suspect with a few hours in a decanter this may have blossomed a bit better.

This was very structured and seems a good candidate to close up pretty hard soon. For now, though, despite there being a lot of tannin, the grain is powdered enough that it doesn't seem harsh, and the material has this sheer, slender presence that takes all that muscle and puts it in a feminine package. The result is very, very drinkable. Nevertheless it was one of those wines where most of the aromatic expression takes place in the first two minutes, when it offered an interesting scent of stony earth on top of the fruit, and then it got much more shy.

After Jay Miller gave this wine a score of 98 in the Wine Advocate, I went out hunting for bottles. I could only locate one, as the others had been scarfed up. It has been in my cellar ever since. I could keep my hands off this bottle no longer, so I opened it tonight. And it is really, really good. 98 points? I don't think so. But I wouldn't fault Jay's enthusiasm. Dark, nearly opaque garnet. Nose of dust, licorice, cedar, and dark fruits. Full palate of ripe dark fruit (blackberry, currant, plum), spice, and licorice. Excellent length. Vibrant, focused, mouthwatering acidity. Youthful tannins. Integrated oak. High alcohol barely noticeable. I really wish I had more bottles.

Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Colorino. All steel - 12 months of it. Black cherry kool-aid, visually. Earthy aromas. I like the softer fruit style here; much lighter than the full-on Sagrantino, but still with some nice tannin. The 2006 was grippier (?), interested to see what later vintages produce. A solid producer from Montefalco - former manager of Colpetrone, I believe. Americans obsessed with big, lush and tannic wines should start to look to Umbria. More power for your dollar than Tuscany (which shares similar climate and terroir) as it remains fairly unknown.

This bottle had died and gone to heaven and since it was my only one, I can't compare to other bottles of the same vintage. Came in dead last at a tasting of 11 wines where it was by far the costliest. Stinky nose, off flavors (but not corked), off nose, drank as though it were poorly made, which would be out of character for this producer. I'll call it an off bottle, but not because it was obviously corked or oxidized. Others have had better luck with this.

11/19/12, 10:55 AM - you this kind of review doesn't help anyone, really. You serve the wine way too cold and then give a low ranking based on wrong "handling". Why bother posting this publicly?

Painfully young and intense and very difficult to get a real impression of.
Seems like it will turn out to be great but still to young! Potential from 92-95p.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

Nose of cherry and pepper. A little thinner than expected in mouth, though well balanced. Medium finish with a typical negroamaro bitter aftertaste

Served at room temp and might have suffered as a result. Dry white style and hard to see much standing out. Smokey minerals and slate is nice albeit subtle.

PNP for dinner with 2 other couples and initially liked the core flavor but the tannins are still gripping and their was a certain granular feel to them...for me that never really lifted but my buddy was more patient, or just got the last big pour from the bottle and he thought the wine had really opened and come around...there is a lot stuffed in here but it needs time or at least a good bit of air

While I like this wine, I do think it was slightly overdone. It is huge and enormously fruitforward. Ultra dark color with thick, unctuous texture and rip-roaring blackberry and blueberry fruit. There is some earthiness and Herbes de Provence underneath, but the fruit simply dominates. Unfortunately, there is also a hint of heat poking out on the finish. I opened a second bottle a few days later and that one showed consistent with the one described in this post. Clos Saint Jean is a producer I am currently avoiding because the experiences with their wines I have had have been less than ideal. If you like more "modern" CdP, though, this might well be for you.

8/25/12, 2:23 AM - you drank it way too early. Give this another 5+ years and the fruit will be softened and the wine will have integrated overall.

Popped and poured. Deep, youthful hue. Somewhat muted nose of dark berries, currant, herbaceous notes, and a quite a bit of toasted oak. Medium to medium-plus acidity, seemingly lighter on the palate than what the color would indicate. It's quite hard to discern any fruit and the flavors are dominated by oak. Moderate acidity points at paring with a meal, but even after the end result is this simply lacks flavor. The tannins are rough and astringent on the close. Would be best to age for a number of years before even considering revisiting and hope for the best.
