4/19/24, 8:38 AM - I don't drink enough Bedrock or SCM Cab to offer a good opinion on that, but I would say the 2008 was made in a generous style, but not anywhere near crossing the line into spoof. Probably more middle-of-the-road in ripeness. I'm more oak-averse than most as well, and found this not to have any overt oakiness.
4/21/24, 7:14 PM - Yes, that's a good price. To be clear, this is the 2008 and the K&L has the 2009. I think 2008 is considered a better Napa/Sonoma vintage, but it's probably a good bet, though one of the two CT notes is not very favorable.
2/27/24, 12:46 PM - No, I won't be buying more of this. It's more of an issue with cellar/fridge space than anything else, but the wine is not compelling enough.
2/2/24, 9:04 AM - My experience with this wine was completely different than both of yours - the opposite, actually. Could this be due to a storage issue in the supply chain, maybe? I got my only bottle during a visit to the tasting room.
9/14/23, 12:41 PM - I don't drink a lot of Rioja, but the oak character seemed pretty typical of Rioja Reserva that I've had in the past. I could certainly be wrong about the origin of the oak barrels on this wine, though.
7/24/23, 1:33 PM - Have not tried Maybach, so I can't comment on that. I also am not saying that this wine was in the same style - I should hope not.I know TRB is the owner/winemaker for Rivers-Marie and winemaker for Maybach (and others), but Mike Smith was his protege and did make some of those wines or had a significant role in making them. From the Scarlett web site:"Mike Smith is an award-winning winemaker who started his career in 2001. Traveling from Portland, Oregon, Mike worked each crush “free of charge” to learn his craft. Following his third harvest, Mike accepted a full-time assistant position from one of the Napa Valley’s most notable winemakers and moved his family to St. Helena. During this tenure, Mike worked with a vast array of wine labels including Maybach Family, Tamber Bey and Rivers Marie. It was during this period that he developed his own philosophies on winemaking, based on the strong foundation he built while working with these established labels.Mike’s innate talent and purist methods have truly made him one of Napa Valley’s superstar winemakers. From the vineyards to the bottle, his hands-on approach and passion for wine are evident in the luxurious portfolio of wines he creates for Scarlett Wines. Mike also makes wine under his own label, Myriad Cellars."
7/25/23, 9:21 AM - Not sure why you guys are spending energy about how Mike Smith was not part of the wine making team at Maybach -- he clearly was and it is documented in many places. I know he is not the "wine maker" right now at Maybach -- I never stated that he was. I only put in my tasting note "Mike Smith of Maybach and Rivers Marie fame". Perhaps that is overstating it a bit, but it is nevertheless, true.
7/10/23, 4:56 PM - Thanks Brian!
5/16/23, 8:35 PM - Agreed. Thanks for the back story. It wasn't bad at all, just not as good as I was expecting (based on some other aged PG bottles).
3/11/23, 3:35 PM - From their website:"The choice of Coho as the name of the brand might seem curious as it doesn’t invoke images of vineyards or wine, but to us the salmon embodies an innate wisdom so essential to understanding ourselves and our environment. As stewards of the land winemakers must strive to sustain our habitat and the species that share it. And like the salmon we need the steadfast will to keep going no matter how difficult the journey."
3/6/23, 6:18 PM - 750
12/17/22, 9:26 AM - Looks like we're both bottom-feeding at the Spectrum auctions. I've had 6 bottles from the case and all have been sound - crossing my fingers on the remaining 6...
10/14/22, 5:05 PM - Hey, that was 3 years ago - $25/btl is a darn good deal with this recent inflation! I hope they show well for you!
9/13/22, 7:53 AM - Curious drink date. With a Bordeaux with this kind of structure, I usually don't even think of drinking it until at least 6 years after vintage (after the early check-in to evaluate). You must like them young and fresh, because I would put the drinking dates between 2025 - 2039.
8/15/22, 8:12 AM - Hi Flitcroft. Yes, you're right. That was 12+ years ago! I've taken the score off...
5/28/22, 8:17 AM - Yes, it is screw capped. I tend to agree with you -- hang on to a few of these for a while longer and let them evolve. This wine, in particular, has the fruit and structure to develop for many years.
5/28/22, 9:35 AM - Thanks for your thoughts and sharing your experiences Goldstone. I'm a fan of screwcaps -- I've had quite a few older (2008 - 2004) California Pinots under this closure in recent years and all showed well. I do think development in bottle is slower, though...
4/23/22, 6:30 PM - Thanks for the shout out. It's nice to know that someone is actually reading one of my 4000+ tasting notes!
3/6/22, 4:16 PM - Yes, not completely flawed, but a little off for sure -- at least, compared to the other recent notes here.
3/4/22, 3:09 PM - Hi Jack - glad your bottle showed so well. Did you notice any brett on your bottle? As you can see from my note, there was way too much brett for me to enjoy my bottle.BTW, good to see someone from PVE here - I grew up there and still visit my folks regularly there.
2/20/22, 8:03 AM - Kudos for not taking my mention of your note as some sort of personal criticism. I appreciate all perspectives on CT notes. In fact, your note (and others) helped me set a ceiling on how much I would pay for this auction lot (I only paid $15/btl in a 3-bottle lot after BP, BTW -- very happy about that).
2/19/22, 4:51 PM - Good instinct on this wine - it's still alive and vibrant.
2/19/22, 1:01 PM - I'm happy to report that your suggestion to drink these up in 2009 was a little pessimistic!
2/6/22, 8:39 AM - Yes, great QPR on this for under $20 for sure. Seems they're gone now, unfortunately.
10/31/21, 10:04 AM - I usually score the wines I write a note for, but sometimes I don't feel like assigning a score. For this wine, I'd go with a range 87 - 89, definitely not a 90 for me.
11/24/21, 9:40 AM - You got an email solicitation for this low-production 2003 Napa Cabernet? Or do you have it in your cellar from long ago?
11/18/21, 8:08 PM - EclecticPalate - you just missed an opportunity. This evening, I picked up a 2-bottle auction lot from SpectrumWineAuctions of this for $24 each. I'm really looking forward to trying a bottle of this...
11/20/21, 1:05 PM - I'm glad you didn't snipe me at the close! My workplace is only about 2 miles from the Spectrum retail/auction storage site, so I don't have to pay shipping either. Nice folks that work there, too.
9/11/21, 3:01 PM - Yes - I tend to agree with you that this needs more time to really flesh out, though I did not taste this in its youth.
7/3/21, 11:07 AM - I doubt this will improve - I think the oak will become more prominent as the fruit fades with more age. I've had quite a bit of aged Cali Pinot in the last few years, but I'm certainly no expert. For example, I had a 1996 W.H. Smith Hellenthal Vineyard (Sonoma Coast) a couple of years ago that I found fascinating and in a zone, but this Occidental didn't have the same that kind of structure in my estimation - more modern style.
4/14/21, 1:18 PM - Yeah, 2 of the 5 bottles that I have tried so far have had a noticeable amount of it. I had a couple of 2004s and they were phenomenal with no brett that I could detect. Same with a few bottles of the 2006 Nielson - really fantastic. Unfortunately, a few different older Bien Nacidos were marred by too much funk and they were just not enjoyable.
3/28/21, 7:22 AM - You were right - the oak outlasted the fruit on this oak monster. Hard to believe of the 20 other notes on this wine, not one mention of oak (besides yours).
12/30/20, 12:33 PM - No - I've only tried the one bottle and I gifted the other. The one bottle I tried was very clean. Some of the other Qupes that I've picked up from WineBid have had some barnyard (2002 and 2004 Bien Nacido Syrah in particular). I've got more of the 2009 Alisos coming, though, and I sure hope they're like my first bottle!
1/27/21, 3:56 PM - carolandjay - sure enough, I got the shipment of more bottles of this from WineBid and the first one was a little bretty. I hope the other 6 bottles are better...
1/30/21, 7:00 PM - Opened another and it was sound and drinking wonderfully. Maybe a bad barrel...
1/13/21, 3:47 PM - I try to do that with almost all of my tasting notes - after all, that's really mostly what we're most interested in when looking at these notes, isn't it? I mean, describing the flavor profile in detail is nice, but much less important than style and structure, to me at least.
9/9/20, 5:09 PM - Okay, got it. Yeah, bummer about the flawed bottle. WineX still has more of this, but I'm gonna pass.
9/9/20, 5:08 PM - Thanks, srh. Really appreciate the detailed info, especially the production numbers.
9/9/20, 5:07 PM - Thanks, srh - appreciate you filling in the info section, but why would you do that for a wine you have not tried?
9/3/20, 8:00 AM - A friend opened this for me - it was the first Booker wine I've ever tried, so no comment on the Syrah question. Holding this Cabernet for a year before trying sounds like a good plan, though the wine is drinking well now (if you like young Cabernet, that is).
6/26/20, 1:16 PM - Not surprising our tastes align, because there's no doubt that this is great Pinot from a great vineyard! I bought 4 bottles from Wine Exchange (I guess you got your one bottle from there?) and I have one bottle left. Not sure how long I can hold off drinking it...
8/31/19, 6:01 PM - I hated it. Absolutely hated it. Still picking the splinters out of my gums...
8/26/19, 1:40 PM - Thanks srh. It is not evident from my note, but I found this to be absolutely dreadful. The opposite of what I look for in red wine. Glad you enjoyed it, though!
8/1/19, 9:15 AM - Yes, I agree. It's available here in California for under $30 USD - I am going to pick up some more bottles to age a bit longer (if I can resist drinking them!). I am turning into a big fan of Aussie Cabernet (also enjoy Kilikanoon, Leeuwin Estate, and Vasse-Felix). Much better value than what is available in California these days.
2/23/19, 12:35 PM - I just tried the 2001 SlB Guettes that WineX is offering ($30) and that was a much better experience.
1/11/19, 2:35 PM - re: "...not Carlisle's best vineyard site..." does not make sense. This bottling is a blend of various DCV sites.
1/11/19, 2:30 PM - I'm not surprised that your disappointed with "the wine rating system." Suckling has been giving ridiculously high ratings for several years now just to get his name plastered on every retailer shelf. Self-promotion = $$$$$ these days.
11/17/18, 5:38 PM - I'll be very interested in seeing if your experience lines up with mine.
11/18/18, 8:43 AM - Glad your bottle showed better than mine did. We should not really be surprised at some bottle variation in a 12-year old bottle, especially since auction wines can be a crap shoot. Though, I think your palate might be compromised seeing how you've gone overboard with Champagne lately ;)
11/21/18, 12:38 PM - Frank - I am now inclined to believe, based on your experience and the glorious 2000 Dennison that I drank a few days ago (please see my note on that), that this was very likely an off bottle.
10/13/18, 8:04 AM - How was this stored overnight?
10/13/18, 11:52 AM - Got it. A little disconcerting.
7/22/18, 11:49 AM - Yes, perhaps you're right about giving this a good, long decant. This bottle was immediately decanted and then consumed over the next 2 hours. It didn't seem to change very much during that time. Still, I don't think would have turned into something that would justify the huge price premium that it commands, especially when you consider that top Northern Rhones sell for much less. It seems to me that this is a label for impressing people more than for real wine lovers who have some sense of value.
5/28/18, 5:44 PM - This bottle was badly flawed. A real shame, but I’ve been having better than usual luck recently, so it’s not too bad of a loss. This was my retailer’s last bottle, so I guess I won’t get the chance to have your good experience with it.
4/2/18, 12:48 PM - Where are you finding this for $15? Even on BerserkerDay, this was more than $25!
4/7/18, 12:32 PM - That's more like it. At $15/btl, I'd be drinking it every night!
4/7/18, 11:43 AM - Well, my note does say "Still some enjoyment...", so it actually was enjoyable.
1/1/18, 9:07 PM - Was the cork on your bottle soaked through more than expected for such a recent vintage? All three of the bottles that I have opened so far were soaked to or near the top of the corks.
12/29/17, 8:39 AM - jfdramis - there is some sentiment from the internet wine community that professional wine reviewers should score wines objectively based on their "quality" even if it's made in a style that does not appeal to them. I completely disagree with this sentiment - I like to see scores that reflect the opinion of the professional reviewer. In any case, I am an amateur wine reviewer on the internet and my scoring reflects what I think of a wine. I almost always back up my score with a thoughtful note on why I do or do not like a wine. Thank you for your comment, but I will not be changing the way I score wine on CT at this time. I am open to changing my views on this subject, but have not heard a compelling argument for it in the many years I have been writing tasting notes.
9/17/17, 7:24 AM - I'm starting to explore Australian Cabernet recently and I have to say that there is very high value compared to what we are getting for the money in the states these days.
7/26/17, 12:55 PM - Thanks for following up on this Eric. I've responded to your email.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
