    December 27, 2014 - The nose on this wine is what pushes it to a 95 for me. It was absolutely stunning, and all the exotic spice notes that are characteristic of this house were there. There is something about the interplay between the cab franc and merlot in Cheval Blanc that is completely unique, I've never encountered anything like it in any other wine. It was also very good on the palate, though the finish was a little shorter than I expected and the first sip was better than the last, although the nose held all the way through. Decanted for an hour and drank from the decanter over the course of 2-3 hours.

    Gorgeous! My hands-down WOTN. Seamless. Lovely silky fruit, yet completely coats the palate. Fantastic now, but seeming immortal right now.

    (Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion) An attractive hue here, although this wine - from a vintage which was very successful on the left bank but not so on the right. At twelve years it is showing some early maturity, with complex and appealing aromas of iron and tea leaves. Fresh, characterful, expressive, and the immediate impression is of a wine that is a success, taking into account the quality of this vintage for the region. The palate follows through, showing a fine presence, with a delicious, sappy, rounded character. It has a little weight, shows a touch of grip at the finish, and remains fresh and very complete throughout. A really lovely style here.

    (Cheval Blanc) The 1996 was also cedary, yet olive-y, and its wood qualities were a kiss too much; in fact, it had the most noticeable oak of the weekend, and that’s not a good thing. The palate was better, more olive-y yet still cedary and square, but it had a tasty edge that the ’99 lacked. Medium weight, tender and tangy, the ’96 had red fruit flavors, and I preferred it to the ’99 on this day, but would much rather have the ’99 in my cellar. The oak blew off a bit, and while everyone ultimately liked the 1983 best in this first flight, most also preferred the 1996 next. It was the most open and friendly in the flight, but it also had the least weight. Someone observed, ‘smoked chili, light raspberry and invigorating minerality

    (Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion) A deep, meaty, concentrated and evolved nose. Fresh, also a little soft, but underneath that a warm and velvety nature coating a core of tannin. Firm, certainly meaty as on the nose, full of potential. Not a great Cheval Blanc, nevertheless very good indeed.

    (Cheval Blanc) a pretty, tasty Cheval that was on the lighter side by Cheval standards with good, fine tannins and a touch of stalk and earth to its palate. There were pinches of wintergreen and nice creamy cherry fruit throughout, with good earth on the finish
