July 18, 2017 - This will come as no surprise ; Cheval Blanc 1996 is a beautiful , professionally crafted wine.It is precise. flavoursome and enjoyable. One notes the lovely cassis backdrop, an enveloping glycerin mouthfeel, and whether real or imagined, a sense that the wine maker loves their product. Their art.

Brambles and blackberries in a creamy soup. I was told by my co-taster that CB can be better than this ; I have no doubt it can , but I left the room with a warm glow and a great sense of satisfaction. It is a wine that does that heart good. I would recommend it to anyone.

June 13, 2017 - From magnum (thanks Roy!). My rating swings between 90 and 95. Decided to go fo upper limit. Great wine, but absolute maccho power house. So different from the Haut Brion (tasted simultaniously). Hard edges, sharp tannins and big wine. Not for those looking for the more feminin side of Bordeaux.

February 28, 2017 - 50th Birthday Winefoolishness (Chicago, IL): I suspect this wine needs a lot more time as it didn't show great. Nose leans toward the candied and high-toned. On the palate this is hard and not providing a ton of pleasure. It does gain some fruit weight with time in the glass, but overall, I suspect it needs another decade in the cellar.

February 28, 2017 - 50th Birthday Celebration Dinner with Wine (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Open, decanted an hour+ before serving. Black cherry with sweet spice. Very firm, not particularly accessible or fun tonight but clear glimmers of potential, just unclear for when.

(Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion) An attractive hue here, although this wine - from a vintage which was very successful on the left bank but not so on the right. At twelve years it is showing some early maturity, with complex and appealing aromas of iron and tea leaves. Fresh, characterful, expressive, and the immediate impression is of a wine that is a success, taking into account the quality of this vintage for the region. The palate follows through, showing a fine presence, with a delicious, sappy, rounded character. It has a little weight, shows a touch of grip at the finish, and remains fresh and very complete throughout. A really lovely style here.

(Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion) A deep, meaty, concentrated and evolved nose. Fresh, also a little soft, but underneath that a warm and velvety nature coating a core of tannin. Firm, certainly meaty as on the nose, full of potential. Not a great Cheval Blanc, nevertheless very good indeed.
