March 9, 2023 - Medium red color. Fragrant cherry, oak, smoke, and licorice aromatics. Just beautiful. Medium bodied, the fruit is still remarkably fresh. A little acidity in the aftertaste provides balance to the red fruit flavor too. Near its peak, tannins are resolved.
One of the best Riojas I’ve ever tasted.

January 30, 2023 - It’s been a good year to open bottles of La Rioja from 2001, the only vintage not offered by the Eguren family at the tasting in Santa Cecilia ten years ago.
Opened half an hour before lunch by The Durand when bland yet good quality cork was quite stuck to the neck of the bottle. As expected, it was decanted because a high level of sediments. Bright ruby colour with an attractive dark core and brownish edges. Vioolet tones anymore. On the nose it begins offering aromas of flesh with sweet spices such as cinnamon, cloves and vanilla. Essence of wild strawberries and ripe cherries too. Ending with a bed of a bouquet of dried herbs. Deliciously complex.
On the palate it shows a decadent silky texture, medium-bodied wine still with a bright acidity, long and delicious final aftertaste. Gastronomic depth like all good Rioja wine.
Finally and even knowing that it is a lost battle in CT, I would like that as it has been recognized over the years that importance of noting whether a wine from La Rioja is crianza, reserva or gran reserva, put on cosecha wine above all to highlight the excellent work in cellar of many processors, granting and recognizing their true value to wines that do not meet the requirements of DOC. All the vigor of San Vicente in traditional wrapping with a modern elaboration. Whew! IMHO time to go.

December 5, 2017 - I guess this is good - there's nothing objectively wrong with it - but it's a lot of what I don't like in Rioja. Dark fruit muddled with what seems to be French oak plus too much tannin for me to drink without food. Tastes like a Rioja that would rather be from Bordeaux and hasn't developed any silky texture or perfume as I'd like. Seems to have the balance to evolve for some time but was my only bottle.

March 6, 2016 - At home with a Spanish chicken/chorizo braise I made...impulse pull from the cellar to find a pairing. Its been a while since I had this wine, thought this may have been gone by now...decanted for about 45 minutes, drank over an hour.

Garnet, translucent color, mild separation at the edges. Nose of dark cherry, leather, violets, toasted oak. Palate of dusted cherry, blue fruits, pomegranate, pipe tobacco...mild oak/coconut on the back palate. Medium finish and body.

Very nice, integrated and mature wine. Probably a shade past its prime but should hold at this level for a few more years. Great pairing with meats/poultry,...anything with paprika will work...classic Rioja
