December 6, 2014 - Bottle was flawed compared to previous. Very flabby, no frame, weird aromas, etc.

October 23, 2014 - This has developed very nicely over the past year. Tannins are still thick on the tail, but nice soy sauce and savory notes emerging on the palate, with plenty of black cherries, blackberries, and leather. In a nice window but this can go another 5-10 years.

October 19, 2014 - A cooler toned merlot and my first experience with Howell Mountain merlot (although I love the cabs). Blue fruit, restrained, but with good balance and depth. Felt well made to me. Tannins were a little overwhelming for my taste and I suggest drinking sooner, rather than later.

July 18, 2014 - What a difference a vintage makes! Had the 05 recently, which is head and shoulders above this. I'm closer to robertdwyer than the rest of the crowd on this one. The Tanzer review could be for a totally different wine imho. Nice simple flavors of raspberry, chocolate, and some faint tomato and mushroom. Tasty enough to drink, but on the thin side, and a clipped tannic finish. Totally get why this was discounted -- makes no sense at SRP. This will likely hold on for many years, but hard to imagine it improving.

May 17, 2014 - From memory, this took a few days to open up. At first it felt like a middling bottle (consistent with many of the reviews here) but if you gave it proper time to loosen up, this really blossoms into a juicy, irresistible example of how good California merlot can actually be.
