March 11, 2017 - PNP and enjoyed over a few hours. First from a lot bought at auction after loving this at one of our quarterly tasting events (Thx NYCCABLOVER for bringing).
Nice to taste again on it's own...and great to see my love of this juice is still strong.
Initial nose is like an old world bdx. with lots of poopy funk, forest floor and dark red fruit. Just the way I like my 20 year old new world merlots.
Texture is super silky, but the acid backbone gives it nice grip and keeps things interesting and engaging. There's still plenty of fine, well integrated tannin here as well which means this wine has a long life ahead.
Love the balance of fruit, tannin and acid. Well made!
On the palate, there's lots of earthiness, chocolate, cassis, dark berry. Pretty complex due to the secondary flavors that come with some age.
Would be interesting to see how this performs in a tasting against some fine Pomerols.1 person found this helpful Comments (1)

March 8, 2017 - At 21 years of age, there is still life going here, with a round, lush, blast of dark chocolate and cherry fruit. There is no reason to hold this any longer though.2 people found this helpful Comment

September 10, 2016 - Q3 Tasting - Aged Cali (The Apt): Wine #4: Truly one of the big surprises for me of the tasting and one of my favorites. This had a bit more age which came through and made the wine seem more mature (esp on the heels of the Montelena). Great fruit and a nice balance. Maybe a hint of alcohol, but suspect if had had the opportnuity of a decant that would have blown off quickly. (11 pennies)1 person found this helpful Comment

September 10, 2016 - Q3 Tasting - Aged California Wines - Pre 2006 (New York, NY): #4 of 20 wines tasted double blind. Color is reddish-brown. Barnyard aromas on the nose. On the palate red fruits but not primary, lots of tertiary flavors of earth and leather. Very round, velvety mouthfeel. Super long finish. My guess is this was merlot from 90-95. This is one of the wines we brought to the tasting and I am a big fan although I did not know where it was in the line-up. This was my second favorite overall. For the group it was 3rd place with 11 pennies.1 person found this helpful Comment
