Community Tasting Notes 4

March 11, 2022 - Agree with notes from Rieslingfan.

Oh man, what a beautiful bottle. Ripe raspberries, fresh cherries, maraschino cherries, and lingonberries upon opening. Incredibly fresh with a light body. This wine seriously tastes like a young New World Pinot. Decanted off the sediment into a narrow decanter, and 30-60mins of air is already revealing wonderful complexities of age, though the fruit isn’t fading one bit; drying sweet tobacco, blood orange, old leather like a worn catcher’s mitt, sandalwood; these tertiary aromas and flavors mingle with the fresh mixed berries. It’s all wrapped up in a subtle sweetness that is very appealing. Some tannins are unbelievably still present, though smoothed and polished. Finish is looong and complex, continuing the pinging back and forth between fresh fruit and aged tertiaries.

This wine is capital D, delicious. And not just, “delicious for a 30+ yr old Zin”, it is legit wonderful. My non-wine enthusiast drinking partner took one sip and said “Wow this is really good!”, with zero knowledge (or craps given) about the history, age, varietal etc.

I have half a glass left and I’m going to savor the sh*t out of it.

September 3, 2021 - It’s not every night that I open a 32 year old Zinfandel. Maybe I should. First sip at 5 PM is all ripe berries. Come back 90 minutes later with dinner, and the red fruit supplemented by bottle aged sweetness is all there. It’s supplemented with dried herbs, leather, and a lovely old wine patina of dried orange peel, old wood and brown tobacco. There’s even still a touch of tannic astringency, as if the wine is saying “I’m not done yet.”

November 26, 2020 - Not as brilliant as some of the other library bottles we had - probably a bit more over the hill. Nonetheless it was enjoyable and had a fairly standard aged Claret sort of feel to it. Nice pairing with Thanksgiving turkey.

January 18, 1996 - ORANGE PINK ON THE EDGE. RASPBERRY & CHOCOLATE IN THE NOSE. RICH FRUIT, LICORICE, PLUMS & CHOCOLATE IN THE FLAVOR. MEDIUM LENGTH FINISH. IMPROVING WITH THE YEARS. PREVIOUS TASTINGS 86..88..89.
