February 19, 2016 - Château Cheval Blanc vertical tasting dinner #1 (Vienna Cafe & Wine Bar): Light ruby. Fantastic nose, much better than the last bottle. Not as rustic and the old library book smell was lacking with this bottle. Light in weight but has a graceful mouthfeel. Red fruits, Brett, menthol, mushroom, and roses. The Brett was fairly strong, but something I tend to like when it has a sweetness to it, as with this wine. A finish that tails off. Lost steam after a couple of hours, so this is a wine to be consumed now.

February 6, 2016 - Our First Acker Auction (Marea in NYC): Our first experience with a Cheval Blanc. I'd been very interested to try and this did not disappoint. When first opened it was on the musty side, but after a filtering and decant the wine started to come alive. I worried that we'd just have a bit of time with it, but it actually went for quite a few hours and was still ok as we were finishing the last sip. Leather and saddle and forest floor and just a hint of fruit but really just a hint. Lovely.

December 27, 2015 - Auction purchase with unknown provenance. High shoulder fill. Cork loose and fully saturated, removed in pieces. Sadly this was completely maderized. But that didn't stop the non-oenophiles at the party from drinking the entire bottle, when we told them how rare and expensive it was.

December 20, 2015 - Cheval Blanc Vertical Tasting (Old Swiss House, Lucerne, Switzerland): Ripe garnet in color. Nose showed mature raspberries with hints of tobacco and unfortunately an unpleasant (sweaty) taste. Mature, short, metallic and one dimensional. Tannins are too dry. Not my type of Cheval...

July 15, 2015 - Opened up with a slight musty cellar stink. A couple of hours in the decanter and it was humming. It had a beautifully perfumed bouquet. Sweet cedar and tobacco with some violets thrown in for good measure. In the mouth it was resolved and even with no elements sticking out. The fruit is floral scented cassis and savoury elements play in the background. Pretty close to its apogee I suspect.
