Community Tasting Notes 5

September 10, 2016 - Tasting with Salil at my house: bottom neck fill, good color, cork came out cleanly with the durand. slow ox'd for four hours. Leather, tar, earth come together on the nose to present a nicely mature rioja. The wine tastes of deep darkness with the elements of the nose mixing together with fading dark fruits and a moderately long finish. The acidity holds this together and made for a really enjoyable drink. Paired with braised lamb shoulder chops, roasted brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes.

August 1, 2016 - Interesting wine that in the end did not move me. Loved the nose: maple, leather and dried cherry. Warm and complex. Acidity was elevated and finished very abruptly. Good, old school but in the end not nearly as satisfying as other wines from this producer / style. (88)

December 28, 2015 - Very mature color - amber with a touch of red in the center. Nose has lovely tertiary notes of crisp fall leaves, earth and tobacco. The palate has a quick rush of sweet fruit that is matched by mature complexity and a lively finish. This is very good and even better if you like older wines like I do. Super stuff. (91)

March 17, 2015 - Seemed like dusty bookshelves on opening. Tawny in color almost like a Madeira. Very secondary/tertiary flavors of leather and cedar with just a little fruit on the mid-palate, but needed quite a vigorous aerating in the glass and it would come around. At the end of it's run. These can hold on, but Grand Riserva's are the ticket at this age.
