Community Tasting Notes 48

January 8, 2022 - My last bottle of this wine, more than 17 years since my first. Dark ruby core with a brick-red to russet fringe. The nose immediately confirms that there is still a lot of fruit here. Herb, fleetingly, but mainly chocolate and malty notes from the time in oak. While my first tasting seventeen years ago signalled a lean to the New World, and a more specific tilt in favour of Australia when almost a decade old, this time it seemed to stay in Europe pretty much. Yet, as on all previous occasions, the link with Italy, let alone Tuscany, is nebulous, which is due, I believe, to the Bordeaux varieties having a dominating impact, despite being in the minority. Medium to fullish body. Mellow. Fully ripe and flavourful with some sweetness, though missing the "sweet spot" on my palate. I see from my personal notes that I had consistently rated this wine a half-notch higher, except in 2008, when it had closed-down. Today, I was almost willing to follow the pattern of my assessments, but in the end, though this clearly very good wine made a convincing impersonation of a Bordeaux blend, it didn't have an Tuscan soul. However, Bravo! for its ability to cellar and provide enjoyment over many, many years at such a modest price.

November 9, 2021 - Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour. Clear deep garnet color. Attractive notes of mixed black and red fruit, violets, crushed gravel, hints of dried meat, leather, porcinis and tar. This bottle seems fully mature and unlikely to improve further.
