May 24, 2014 - From magnum. Opens with a prodigious nose of brambly fruit and a smoky note that initially repeats on the palate but subsides with air. In the mouth, this is lush but also impeccably balanced, with black currant and blackberry fruit notes accented by roasted coffee and an earthy minerality. It's full bodied, to be sure, but in no way heavy or ponderous and the fruit avoids being overtly sweet. Rounded tannins make an appearance on the long and very satisfying finish. This special wine appears to be at peak but isn't in danger of declining anytime soon. We shared this with my dad, who declared it one of the best cabs he's ever had. I agree.

August 26, 2013 - Birthday Celebration (Del Frisco - Chicago IL): Brief note. Probably my favorite Shafer of the evening amongst a dozen 1978-2005. Lots of ripe fruit, but with great energy and freshness to maintain impressive balance. At a very good place now.

June 26, 2012 - Birthday Celebration (Balena - Chicago IL): From magnum. This is a very large scaled, showy wine. Black and dense with lots of big spice flavors from fruit and new oak. No question this is a very well made wine, but this style of ripeness and extraction isn't my favorite. I liked it, while others liked it considerably more.

June 26, 2012 - brought to Balena for a birthday bash - mostly magnums. Wine was quite the mouth feel ... lots of chewy supple black fruit, hints of some subtle tobacco that i have come to love in Shafer cabernets. What an amazingly long finish - very flash wine .... love the plush and the young fruit still. This is what a Napa cab should be - since it's so special - I am keeping two other bottles to drink at a later date!

September 1, 2011 - brought to #cabernet day tasting. tied for 5th among 21 entries, but my wotn. really sketchy cork, with signs of seepage, no resistance when removing from the bottle, and a light and hollow feel. all that said, the wine was magnificent. it was as close to perfect as i've ever experienced. fully integrated, loaded with ripe and supple black fruits, vanilla, dill, spicebox, and some graphite. everything was beautifully balanced from the mouth through the finish. the mouth was bursting with juicy fruit and subtle tobacco, and the finish was long and mesmerizing. this was a ridiculously expensive bottle of wine, and it did not disappoint. i wish i could afford more; i'd buy every bottle i could get my hands on. this will last much longer, but it's in a perfect window right now.
