December 2, 2016 - Wow. This wine is finally shedding it's effusive fruit profile. The current manifestation is one of a sublime, graphite infused wine with outstanding length. I have been drinking about 1 per year to follow the development and frankly have been a bit perplexed by the staying power of the overt and youthful fruit profile. This bottle has shed this profile and the result is approaching magic. It now has a very similar flavor profile to older Shafer Hillside Selects- more specifically the 1997 (which is an all-time favorite). This is a magnum to definitely seek and enjoy.

May 27, 2016 - Bottle opened and allowed to rest for 2 hours, then followed over 4 hours. Treat opened for our daughter's HS graduation celebration with family and close friends. Red fruits show a maturity and elegance that's far too infrequent in Calicabs. Still definately california, but dark tea, aged tobacco and faint wood all play a notable role this well-integrated and well-aged wine. Stands fine on its own or with food, and progressed beautifully though the evening. Confident my remaining bottle will last to her college graduation in 4 years (5 is NOT AN OPTION!)

April 16, 2016 - From magnum, paired with sirloins. An absolutely gorgeous representation of California Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright red fruited CS nose that alone was worth the price of entry. Extremely fine balance, with tannins mostly softened and secondary smoky notes starting to emerge. Delicious. Great length, adorable for sipping and that stood right up with the steaks. Great now and will easily continue for many years.

February 7, 2016 - Extremely ripe and extravagant, but with enough acidity and texture to remain fresh and refreshing. So much fun.

August 15, 2015 - After purchasing this at the winery and holding it 11 years in my cellar, I shared this amazing anniversary magnum with fellow wine lovers at a graduation-from-medical-school party. Everything about the wine had the class and sophistication we've come to expect from John and Doug Shafer. The longer it sat, the more it changed. Tastes of the Old World were first on the tongue with the lush Napa follow-through similar of Hillside Select. It paired so well with the Italian red and white pasta dishes we served.
