July 7, 2017 - Dark amber-orange color. Dense nose, packed with winey fruit aromas, cassis, lime zest, warmly woody scents, and a faintly ashy note. This also has some hard candy smells similar to those in the Quinta Ruban. With prolonged sniffing, I do begin to discern some of the promised stony aromas around the periphery. The palate is piquantly - nearly bitterly - woody. This develops some citrus fruit nuance at midpalate, and lingers with a malty, chocolate-flavored heat at the back of the mouth. Throughout, this has a rich, sweet warmth which is aromatically and texturally similar in some respects to Bourbon. In the hierarchy of Private Editions I have tried, I would rank this above Milsean, but below Ealanta and Finealta. There probably aren't too many bottles of this knocking about after 5 years, but it's worth a try if you can find one.

January 24, 2013 - Medium to full body, with excellent alcohol integration. Restrained nose of creme caramel, toasty oak, and mint; complex flavors of new (American? -> http://www.cellarnotes.net/wine_barrels.htm) oak throughout the palate, particularly on the mid palate, with secondary notes of vanilla bean and sawdust; the finish has notes of caramel, but it's unfortunately very short -- a deliciously savory and intriguing scotch nevertheless. Perfect with a Padron 1964 Anniversary Maduro (http://www.famous-smoke.com/padron+1964+anniversary+maduro+corona+cigars/item+11686). 90-92

Update: 3 months later, the bottle is about 2/3rds empty. The nose hints of soft caramel. The oak flavors aren't as strong on the palate as before -- the sawdust is all gone; this has become a more mellow dram now. The toasty sweet oak finish is veeeery long, and not easy to erase even after having other whiskeys. Certainly a memorable drink, albeit a bit oxidized. 90-93

Update 2: almost 4 month from first opening, and the nose appears to have faded away; still has a medium long finish, but much more mellow. 88-90+

January 4, 2013 - - Yellow brown color with medium forming legs. It's in total harmony with a medium body with a medium finish - This is a great scotch! And a rare one at that. In my area all sold out.. thank god I was able to score a half case. I am half way through my 2nd bottle. Everyone that I have shared this beauty with has fallen in love. I did take note from Dr Bill Lumsden the whisky Creator for Glenmorange and cut this whisky with a small ice cube. The nose; red fruit, black currents, mixed berries and vanilla. Palate is soft and silky with some sweetness and american oak. Finish; citrus, mint, vanilla, and spice. At $80 bottle its a steal. You have to spend more than twice that to match the greatness of the Artein.
