January 6, 2024 - brown sugar, good complex and mature barolo, didnt really excite me but thats probably saying more about me than the wine.

October 6, 2023 - Freakishly deep ruby for a Nebbiolo of this age. Serious, brooding aromas of tar, black fruit, and minimal green. Large scaled palate presence and weight, powerful and relatively clenched with some wood presence and huge tannins. This just kept coming on with more air, but I honestly think it is no more than halfway toward full maturity. Immensely impressive titan of a wine and completely different from its 1997 stablemate served alongside it.

August 14, 2022 - Well, slow out of the box, but as the hare inexorably yields to the turtle , this Gaja performs in the end, providing a great experience at its advanced age. The nose is herbal and dark fruit qualities. The palate is eased into an older, blue fruit experience that is muted, but then we slam into the reminder that this is no ordinary Langhe: minerals, licorice, tart blueberries, violets and eucalyptus assault with only yielding to an acidic vibrancy which is quite remarkable. A bit past it’s prime, but a testament to fine winemaking.

December 4, 2021 - Sixteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Inovasi - Lake Bluff IL): In Gaja '97 Langhe Nebbiolo horizontal, all decanted 5 hours in advance. Good overall, but neither of the Barolo cuvees were as interesting as the great Barbaresco cuvees.

August 18, 2021 - Pop and pour. Decanting might have been preferable, if not for aeration, then for filtering the large amount of sediment in the final glass. So it goes. In the glass, leaning towards auburn at the rim, but still deep, dark maroon at the core. On the nose, allspice, fennel, and cherries, the kind of spicy exotic mix I enjoy. On the palate, soft on the attack, with aged notes and a core of dark fruit, which then transitions to a more structured wine on the midpalate, but it's the classic iron fist in a velvet glove - that structure comes with an abundance of spice and some secondary notes of rose and tar, leading to a long, minerally complex finish. Great wine that hits both the intellectual and hedonistic spots.

(Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Conteisa) Tart red fruit with subtle meat flavors on nose; gorgeous, plush, spicy, earthy, tart red fruit and plum palate with good acidity, and young yet; medium-plus finish
