November 20, 2020 - I enjoy a lot, but not quite as much as some others as lacks some of the electric acidity I look for in Austrian Riesling. A little more peachy-apply than citric, rounded mouthfeel with good fruit and terrific length. Shows a touch of fresh herbs too. Fully in the zone. 91-92 pts.

November 14, 2020 - I've been on a Austrian kick for a while now and Nigl has risen to the top of the heap for me and this was no exception. Peachy, lemony, herbal nose. Palate is sweetly fruited with a real rocky salinity that gives nice texture and definition to it all. Brilliant stuff at maturity now.

June 15, 2019 - Shocking youthful, this doesn't come across as 20 years old at all. Clean, pure, green fruit, sweet herbs, rocks on the back end, nice length.

April 27, 2018 - Utterly spellbinding showing for this wine, which seems to be at its peak. Crisp, mature apples and pears, minerals and a bucket-load of refreshing saline acidity. So balanced and so drinkable. A delight for those who crave rocks in their glass of Riesling.

October 2, 2017 - Mostly 1994 Cal Cabs (Treva, West Hatrford): Another wonderful showing... so much stone, saline, citrus, rainwater and chalk. So much lip-pursing acidity... Not sure how long this will live, but I would not be afraid to continue to cellar this... although it's delicious now. UPDATE: On day two, I was better able to look at the color, which seemed a bit darker than I remember. The flavors seemed a bit more evolved and dried out. Perhaps not one to hold for the long term?

October 20, 2015 - Wines with biryani (Milford, CT): This was utterly breathtaking; so much drive and punch. Very sleek, svelte and shimmering on the palate with perhaps the most minerality I've encountered in a wine for some time. The endless finish was a lip-pursing, saline, and drenched with wet stones. Wow.

October 20, 2015 - This is in the zone. Just an absolutely spectacular bottle of wine, drinking superbly right now with an array of ripe orchard fruits, lemon cream, mature smokiness, and a remarkably vivid stony/saline mineral character. Each sip seems to start with fruit up front, but turns savoury and rocky on the back end, leaving the impression that this came partly from fruit and partly from a rock quarry. The balance is impeccable, with powerful acidity keeping it really fresh and light on its feet, and incredible length.

March 28, 2015 - My second bottle of the nice little 1999 Austrian horizontal I recently acquired. It's brighter and more vivacious than bottle #1, the Jamek Klaus, the fruit here all lemons and pineapples and bright neon yellow with just a slight bit of kerosene as a hint of its age. It's laced with a chalkiness that contributes to its sense of freshness, along with a ripping, serrated texture.
