1988 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas
- Northern Rhône
Community Tasting Notes 16
August 13, 2016 - Nose is pretty epic on this wine, just an intense pop of black ripe fruit wrapped in smokey bacon and dusted with fresh soil. It had this almost aggressive chilling aspect on the nose that kept you going back for more.
The wine was decanted for about 4 hours then traveled for 2, upon reopen it had shut down and gotten clipped but after about 30 minutes it really opened up, that savoury sweet fruit layered in with such concentration at its core. The finish carried especially long as that meatiness just lingered.
Fantastic bottle of syrah, one of the best I've had.
August 12, 2016 - Oooh. An eye opener. Very smokey and meaty on the nose and on the palate. Some bacon and black olives. One of those perfumes that keeps changing with time. Great acidity on the palate. Tannins have softened by the time I tasted it. Decanted for 3 hours. I'm no Rhone expert but this is the best Rhone I have ever tasted.

August 1, 2015 - Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red/purple center with light red rims. The medium intensity nose offered up black cherries, soil, and red fruits.
In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with ripe fruit, notable rounded tannins and good length.
This wine seems to have recently entered into the drinking zone. It suffered in comparison with some heavy-weight wines. However, it is attractive and will continue to develop.

March 22, 2015 - Saturated cork and signs of minor seepage. What can you say other than utter elegance, complexity and balance! Lingering savoury aftertaste that leaves you craving another sip, and suddenly the bottle has come to an end. A wine to just lean back and savour every sip of.
