April 2, 2016 - Old Heitz Martha's v. Old Ridge Monte Bello (NoMad): Great nose, highly expressive, nearly floral, dry underbrush. Beautiful drinking right now. Still very big on the palate with black currant, strawberry, black cherry, and menthol notes. More advanced than the '94, which was brooding by comparison. Good one to take now.

March 5, 2016 - # 3 of a blind tasting dinner I promoted with friends. The other 2 wines were also 1993 - Dunn Howell Mountain which was #1 and Leoville Barton. Ridge was great, but somewhat flat on the nose and less complex than the other 2 which proved Dunn for my palate is the one from Napa.

December 11, 2015 - Medium ruby color, having thrown a fair bit of sediment. After decanting and breathing for 45 minutes, it presented a complex bouquet of leather, cedar, dried currants, and prunes. Ditto the palate. Still surprisingly tannic on the finish, with gripping acidity. Good, but probably slightly past peak.

May 26, 2015 - Decanted the wine and drank it over a three hour dinner. Plums, tobacco, and ink on the nose. The palate was very smooth with a lovely tea leaf after taste. It had the finness. It tasted younger than its actual vintage. The wine evolved nicely throughout the night. At one point, it tasted like a 10 year old barolo to me. In a very good drinking window now. No point to wait.
May 25, 2015 - Tasted along with '79 Lafite-Rothschild, '83 Margaux, '89 Latour, '94 Petrus and '98 Haut-Brion.
Clear, medium intensity ruby color.
The nose is developing with a medium(+) aroma intensity. Aromas of pure, dense black fruit. Fresh cassis and plums. There is lots of new oak with expensive vanilla, mocha, cold espresso and money. Sweet spice, new leather, cigars, grass and some floral notes of violets. This is deep, massive but a bit too much.
Dry on the palate with a medium acidity, medium(+) body and medium(+) rugged tannins. The flavor intensity is medium(+) with massive, sweet black fruit. Baked plums, expensive vanilla, fudge and leather. The finish is medium(+).
Well, this wine is clearly of outstanding quality but in tonights line-up it was out-staged. It lacked that elegance and finesse that one could find in the Bordeaux wines. However, it was fun to taste and this is a great bottle of Cab which drinking very well right now.2 people found this helpful Comments (1)

(Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello) A similarly intensely coloured hue. Very backward on the nose, which still shows awkward aromas of toffee-edge oak. The palate is simply massive, with a dense structure of tannin and acidity, and yet is silkily textured. There is a ton of fruit. This impressive wine needs a good five or ten years further bottle maturation before I would touch another.
