Expert tasting note: "Mediun to deep ruby-red in color. Dark fruit aromas on the nose are initially quite restrained, but open to reveal ripe, licorice-like concentration. Intense ripe black-fruit on the palate is beautifully balanced by good acidity. Notes of cedar & licorice open on the mid-palate. Alcohol is in balance and the wine finishes with a good girm tannic structure providing good grip - the structure gives the finish good length." - 11/98 DCAMW

1994 was a warm year: 14.3 degrees Celsius, or 1.4 degrees Celsius compared to normal. Overall rainfall was high, but the distribution of precipitation during the year was irregular. The beginning of the year was mild and humid, but with a relative coolness at the beginning of April. Very hot and rather dry weather set in during the months of July and August. From 7 September, the weather cooled with a significant rainfall until the end of the month.

1994 was a warm and dry year but marked by the rains of September which resulted in a slight dilution of the grapes. The color at the heart of the glass is deep and ruby red, while the edge of the disc is revealed by an evolution in accordance with its age. Powerful, fine and complex, the nose with aromas of red fruits and spices is also marked by the aromas of roasting: cocoa, caramel, coffee and vanilla. The evolution of the wine is noticeable through the notes of cedar and candied banana. The attack in the mouth fresh and elegant, is silky and evolves towards a great complexity. A cocktail of fruit with a majority cherry dominates. The tight tannic frame is very well controlled, dense without being heavy. The intensity of the wine is continuous and lasts until the final of a beautiful length where the cabernet franc proves remarkable aromatic intensity despite its low proportion in the blend.

Vintage quality: Average
Current condition: Likely past it
The 1994 Bordeaux vintage was, overall, average but certainly superior to the three vintages before.
Apart from a damp April, the spring was ideal and led to an early flowering. The summer was warm and sunny until a deluge struck on September 7, battering vineyards an...
