March 23, 2024 - From half bottle. Still youthful and going strong, well balanced and tons of stuffing but has tough competition from other recent wines that offers more elegance and finesse. Still, a wonderful wine from a great vintage. 94-95

March 16, 2024 - Really tight and rather acidic right after opening. Reading others' notes, decanted (some sediment) and aired for 4 hrs. Really great at hr 6. Nose: Great 9/10. Palate: 9/10. Medium-full bodied. Soft and elegant. Velvety tannin. Smooth. Finish: 8/10. Price: 8/10 ($150 2023). Enjoyment: 10/10. Would buy again: Probably (still one left). @ good drinking window now.

    March 10, 2024 - Calon Segur 2005 Magnum.

March 9, 2024 - Still quite closed and monolithic with a clipped finished. Perhaps representative of a vintage that has been hailed as great but may never deliver in our lifetime.

February 25, 2024 - Still a deep fiery garnet red. Some change at the rim. Nose is dense - red berries, red fruits, perhaps a touch of menthol and eucalyptus- almost Antipodean. The tannins are still quite pronounced and chewy. The palate has a balsamic note and the overall impression is of relatively high acidity. Moreish but the acidity is overweening. Solid but rather military medium.

EDIT: I’ve tried it again this evening so 48hrs after opening - it’s mellowed somewhat so I agree with the tip to decant the wine (I left it open for 5 hrs before drinking it). But I don’t think it’s that complex and satisfying - solid but lacking flair.

February 9, 2024 - Decanted 1 hour. Intense nose with graphite/pencil, black cherries, almonds and thyme. Really big on the palate - plenty of super, delightfully integrating tannins and fresh acidity. Palate has lots of blackberries, violets, fresh herbs. Has a light savouryness to it with long persistence; a super mouthfeel with real depth to it. This wine still feels young - it’s inky and deep in the glass and has a long life ahead of it. Excellent. Drink now (just) - 2040.

January 27, 2024 - Decanted 2 hours. Inky violet, garnet rim. Black currant, licorice, and a bit of raisin on the nose. Balanced palate of just-ripe black plum, wet slate, just a little birthday cake. Tannins still quite big, notably long finish, with a shade more heat than you'd expect for a 13%. Didn't knock my socks off on its own, but it sure brought out the best in a coq au vin. I don't get the impression this will get massively better from here, but the tannins will presumably integrate a bit more, and there's certainly no rush whatsoever, this will be good for decades.

EDIT: better half, who has a much better palate than I, zero interest in drinking wine she doesn't love, and for whom "this is good" is high praise, took a sip and said, "whoa, this wine is SO good." I stand by my opinion, but if you're going to believe one of us, definitely believe her.

January 15, 2024 - PnP. Drinking well upon pouring but continues to improve over the 2 hours we drank it. Well integrated fruit with graphite, dark chocolate. Strong finish. Lives up to the hype upon release. No hurry to drink.

December 24, 2023 - I had Coravin’d a couple glssses for Christmas 2021. Opened the full bottle for this Christmas as was in very good shape with no telling it was in fact Coravin’d. Decanted over 3 hours and a fair bit of sediment. On the nose it was very much classic Bordeaux and picked up some fresh youthful leather. A very very small bit of green on the nose that has faded away after about two hours. Awaiting the 2000 and 1995 to drink still
