May 10, 2013 - First Growths Masterclass, Sydney. Deep crimson/purple colour. Double decanted 90 minutes prior to tasting. Smoke and blackberry with some vanilla on the nose. Lush, decadent palate of juicy black fruit compote and some faint woody notes on the midpalate. Medium to long finish with still powerful but clearly integrating tannins. Can't see it getting a lot better than it is now. Lovely.

May 9, 2013 - Grand Bordeaux Tasting 2013 (Royal Automobile Club, Macquarie Street, Sydney): Ruby, rim fade, medium intensity, coloured tears. Medium intensity aromas of ripe blackcurrant tending to subdued Ribena notes, slight pencil shavings, herbaceous - slight pyrazine, slight dusty quality, biscuit and spice. In the mouth the wine is thick, dense, chewy, savoury, charred almost burnt in fact. Some black almost prune fruit, bit warm, but the fruit carries and carries. Tannins are noticeable but fine. Well made but not for me.

December 12, 2012 - Deep in color, there is a beautiful purity of fruit, but the wine is tight, primary and needed air along with coaxing before the licorice, floral, earth, black cherry, spice and chocolate covered plum notes began to emerge. Silky and seductive, the wine will be much better with at least another decade of bottle age.

September 22, 2010 - Was blind tasting this 05 Cheval. The sweetness and the vanilla taste are one of the kind

October 1, 2008 - 2005 Red Bordeaux Vintage Farr Vintners Masterclass (Vintners Hall, City of London): Colour less intense than Angelus, and nose much softer, with fruit but no overwhelming alcohol. Fine but very pronounced tannins, very primary, no great length. Not for me.

(Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion) A fine nose here, quite vibrant and aromatic, a touch chalky, with pure red fruit character, elegant with cranberry and redcurrant characteristics. There is a gentle smokiness to it but it has a very restrained application of oak, and there are quiet nuances of liquorice and crunchy tar. Beautiful purity on the palate, very well defined and elegantly complete, balanced and light-footed, although with appropriate substance and a core of well judged tannins. Not a prodigious wine, but it has lift, vigour and definition on its side. It is very true to the Cheval Blanc style based on my tastings of older vintages, and this will be absolutely fine in 10-20 years time.
