November 6, 2019 - Deep purple; tannic, but opening up after a 2-hour decant; dark fruit, good nose; very good balance.

September 7, 2018 - Still got plenty of structure. Restrained and elegant.

September 7, 2017 - The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are slow, long and thin. Moderate sediment present in bottle, this was decanted off. It smells like raisin, blackberry, raspberry and chocolate. It tastes like red cherry, mineral, leather (saddle), mild oak, sweet tomato and tobacco. The body is medium/full. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has mild acidity and is mildly tannic. Decanted and tasted over 4.5 hours, was at its best after 3 hours and didn't seem to evolve much after this. An excellent wine!

Rockss and Fruit

(Castello di Rampolla Sammarco) If this is any indication 2003 is a freak-show vintage in Tuscany. The nose reminded me of a cross between the new wave Douro wine Zambujiero and some monster Barossa shiraz. Ripe to the point of pruney. Raisiny, port-like aromas of macerated black cherries and just a little bit of spice and mineral. Pretty sweet and ripe on the palate but still precise, pure and focused. This wine has a serious balancing act to do and pulls it off deftly. Long finish with some pretty serious tannin.
