February 15, 2024 - Excellent fruit, saline and olive notes. Darker and softer than the 2017 we just tried.

    November 13, 2023 - Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 2013.
    Strøken parfymert nese.
Skikkelig digg, men bra stram i maska fortsatt.

November 5, 2023 - The '13 Monvigliero was super enjoyable, but a bit disappointing relative to expectations. From this 3L bottle with good provenance, it is unclear how the wine will respond to further aging, as we found it surprisingly light on the palate relative to this wine in the best more recent vintages like 2016 or 2019. To be clear, I don't see any signs it will degrade with another 5-10+ years of age, but it's not immediately obvious from what is in the glass that it will get better. Served next to the 2014, the '13 was a bit darker and more complex, but most preferred the '14 for its brightness and energy, and the '14 showed a similar level of concentration and structure as the '13, which was really surprising. Next to a Bartolo Mascarello 2013, the Burlotto seemed almost diluted in comparison.

The nose was intensely perfumed, with signature Burlotto Monvigliero aromatics of dark strawberry fruit, orange peel, candied red roses, and menthol, with a touch of olive and earth notes peaking out from time to time. Compared to the '14, the fruit tones were similar, but a bit darker. On the palate, I found a pure red fruit and floral expression, with red strawberry fruit, red floral tones, and mint. The wine was medium in acidity and medium to light in body, with virtually no perception of tannin. The wine lacked the concentration and structure of the best 2013s, and came across to us as a bit lighter than the recent good vintages like 2016 and 2019.

The 3L was sourced from Rare Wine Company, served alongside the 2014 as a comparison (from 750ml). We opened the wine and decanted into two magnum decanters in the afternoon, which were left in the cellar until dinner. The '13 did not really show any meaningful development with air, with the expression consistent from initial opening in the afternoon through the end of the night.

I think I will try to taste a bottle of the '13 from 750ml soon. The 3L is a fun, but odd format. I'm not sure about Burlotto, but I know that many producers bottle 3Ls by hand, resulting in possible inconsistency.

November 4, 2023 - 2023 Barolothon; 11/3/2023-11/10/2023: Tasted from a 3L over a few hours. Agree with Rob's detailed tasting. This had all the typical notes I expect from the Monvigliero: strawberries, mint tea leaves, and tobacco, but overall, this was a little disappointing relative to '13 expectations. This seemed to close down more and more with air. Very, very smooth, but way too simple. Wanted more depth from this. I hope to pop open a 750ml in the near future to see if there is a big difference. 94

July 8, 2023 - Drank over 3 days. Initially sweet red fruit, olive and firm tannin but pleasant. The tannin and olive came to dominate over the next two days.

November 12, 2022 - Wow, a total baby with loads of candied red cherry and strawberry. It has that olive and stem spice but perhaps just a bit subdued and shielded by the fruit at this early stage. Best 2030+. A taste on night two was hard as nails. A glass on night three was texturally thrilling - totally Burgundian.

November 12, 2022 - Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VII (Chicago, IL): This is probably a great wine in two decades, but it's definitely not there today. Distinctly candied with lots of sweet red fruit; almost exuberantly so. Lots of confected notes and behind it of course is the lovely stemmy perfume of Monvigliero. Intense and ripe, I wonder if they pushed the fruit a little too hard (which is kind of strange because the 2015 has never struck me that way, and I'd think that the vintage was even riper). 100 points though? An open faced sandwich heaped tall with Galloni baloney.

November 11, 2022 - Very very reticent. Even after a few hours in the decanter and over an extended evening of drinking. Started to try and open at the very end, but not enough. After a night of drinking, everyone seemed to appreciate its freshness and general weightlessness, but very closed in terms of its fruit and flavor expression.

October 31, 2022 - Opened ..left opened for a few hours as the first taste was more tannins then fruit. What a change. Beautiful nose of roses and raspberry, excellent red fruit flavours, great length, tar, liquorice and leather notes with a good tannic spine leaving a dryness on the back of the palate. Drinkable now but will age well. Excellent
